Synopsis
Now reissued with a striking new cover, Japanese Detail: Architecture is the classic visual tour of traditional Japanese architecture. In this distinctive collection of images, photographer Sado Hibi captures the richness, harmony, and simplicity of Japanese dwellings. He examines how the Japanese create environments to harmonize with the natural features of their land, and how people have begun to seek shelters that provide tranquility. Hibi's striking colour photographs capture the luminescence of shoji screens, the rough-hewn elegance of flagstone garden paths, and the majestic lines of traditional roofs, windows, and furniture. A thought-provoking introduction discusses the renewal of this natural style of architecture and examines its deep-seated appeal.

Customer Reviews

Each carefully selected image draws your eye to detail.5
This is much, much, more than the usual self-conscious, glossy coffe-table style book. Presented as a visual narrative of traditional Japanese building forms and gardens the text is appropriately kept to a minimum. Each carefully selected image draws your eye to detail: to the earthy and exquisite use of texture, colour, pattern, structure and proportion. You can almost feel the stony paths underfoot, the sun through the fresh green bamboo and the tactile qualities of the weathered timber. It is a book to turn to again and again for creative inspiration, a sense of calm and connection to place. The author successfully shows how the visual language can be communicated on an emotional level to appeal to a wider audience. So, even if you are not that interested in design, after you have read this book, I guarantee you will be hooked.
