Pleasant Family Viewing
I have yet to be dissapointed by Studio Ghibli. The animation of Kikis Delivery Service as always is awe inspiring, and melts you into the world it portrays.
The story is definitely directed towards children, and I can see why some people who reviewed it could not relate to it, if they are comparing the film to more "agressive" anime. Although I cannot see a way that it can be given anything less than 3 stars just for the animation craft, which I found breath-taking at times.
Unlike maybe later films there are no deep underlying currents here for considered involvement. The story is purely 'a child finding her place in the world' tale for the younger generation, and the young at heart. I could so easily have become sickly sweet, but remains quite level-headed.
Very definitely recommended, and I did find the cat funny.
Don't expect spirited away
If you purchase this film because you enjoyed Spirited Away or Princess Mononoke be warned you will be disapointed. The story is dull, look out for an exciting sequence were Kiki helps to make a pie! Kiki's cat is a very annoying character, just listening to it's constantly sarcastic tone made me want to cry at the fact I bought the film. If you're buying this for a child or you just like looking at pretty pictures then fair enough but anyone serious about anime/manga stay well clear.
One word - Beautiful
I bought this film after watching Spirited Away and was just captivated by it. The quality of animation is beautiful (the simple shot of the cow licking Kiki's foot is one that always sticks out) and the flying scenes are awe inspiring.
Many people say how the plot and the script aren't as tight as in other Ghibli films, but I completely disagree. This films has a simple story, and those stories are the hardest to get right. The film shouldn't be compared with something done over a decade later (Kiki being released in 1989), by a matured director. It's a chance to sit back and get lost in a world of childhood wonder, where people are nice and if you believe in yourself, you can do anything.
