Informative and well illustrated...5
I ordered this book as this genre of photography is one that I personally wish to explore commercially at some point in the future. Bruce Smith did not disappoint. I awaited eagerly for this book and devoured page after page. Bruce uses his wealth of experience to show virtually every facet of fashion photography, but does so in a down to earth and easy to understand way. I liked the coverage of the technical aspects, but without the descent into jargon and obsession with equipment that other books get lost in. I have no hesitation in recommending this book to keen amateurs and seasoned pros. We can all learn something from this excellent guide!

What about how?1
This book is mostly a "what" book and the problem is that the "what" part if you think about it for a moment is rather obvious: "make your model feel comfortable when you shoot" - really? wow, never thought about that. The how part is either as obvious as the what-part, missing, subjective or doesn't have a single clear answer.

In this book you will find one step-by-step howto: How to create a perfect white back ground, and then five step-by-step photo shop tricks.

For the rest, the book may serve as a check list, it doens't live up to the title: Reference guide? no. Complete? no (no book is ever complete). Techniques? no. Tools? some.

The single star is for the photos, some are good.

A good overview4
Whilst this book isnt going to teach you how to do everything you need, it offers a huge amount of valuable insights and leads. One book can't teach you everything and anyone who expects it to, is living cloud cookoo land. The 1 star review this book got is highly unfair. This book is more of an insight into an industry than an instructional manual.

What this book will give a beginner is a good starting point, highlighting everything you need to think and learn about. It won't necessarily teach you everything however but will tell you what you need to look into.

The photos are good, the topics are highly relevant and it gives enough information to get you going. A worthwhile read for budding photographers.
