My favourite Christmas present last year...
...was this little book. Although the specific subject modelled is Wermacht Panzer crews, it would be equally useful for anyone wanting to improve their general figure modelling skills. For uniform details, you should look elsewhere, as after a brief opening chapter on uniforms, this is a method book. The very detailed step by step photos of face painting techniques were alone worth it for me. On top of this there are good chapters on painting with enamels and oils, and, as well as the usual construction advice, there is an interesting chapter on building a figure more or less from scratch (if you're feeling really ambitious). So, although quite short, it is pretty comprehensive and very well illustrated; it definitely improved my technique.
