Product Description

Hornby is a household name with a history that goes back over 80 years. This book looks at the Hornby range in depth, and shows how Hornby models can be used to build a model railway layout to suit the space available and all levels of modelling skill. Now completely revised and updated, it is packed with hints and tips for easy layout building, scenic structure modelling, track laying and wiring and extra detailing, and provides ideas for working at the simplest level, including a layout for very young enthusiasts, through to the more experienced modeller. Extra sections relating to recent developments in the hobby are included, along with new photography, new layouts and recent additions to Hornby rolling stock and the Skaledale range.

Editorial Reviews

Review
Excellent. There have been a number of books on specific modelling subjects but fewer general books on the subject. This book by Chris Ellis was first published in 2005 and was a sell-out; so, now we have the second edition. The author has many years of practical modelling experience under his belt and is a very experienced writed as well as editing his own magazine. The revised edition includes new additions to the Hornby range, including new rolling stock. The book is Hornby specific in that examples used are from the Hornby range but most of the infomation it contains applies to products of other manufacturers too. The appendix lists magazines that might be helpful and details the Hornby Collectors' Club and the Hornby Virtual Railway Mk2 DVD. There is also a large index. --Pat Hammond, for Model Railway Express, November 2009

Customer Reviews

Very Limited2
Basically an advertisment for Hornby railways and their stock. Okay, I know that it does say Hornby, but the implication is that it is a bit of a guide to building a model railway that one can use to create something special. This is not the case at all. Whilst each topic is covered - stock, layout, scenery and buildings, there is nothing in any depth that after an initial read hasn't been absorbed. It would be very little use as a reference book for techniques or a book that you would constantly refer back to as required. Nope. This is a simple taster book aimed at young folk who are just getting an itch to build. Well produced and very glossy, but overall, not that useful.

Hornby Model Railway5
This was excellent value for money and made my Xmas to see my father-in-law's face when he realised I'd managed to find the book he'd been after to "complete" his love of his model railway.

Poor Intro to model railways1
I was looking for an authoratative book on the creation of a model railway and turned to Hornby as an estemed source. Unfortunately this book is a poor source of both inspiration and technical details with too little technical detail on how to create a new layout. The illustrations are childlike in their presentation and the text lacks any depth of technical detail to help you plan a layout. A poor advert for the Hornby name.
