The Baldur's Gate series redefined and reinvigorated the PC role-playing scene, and now Interplay brings it to the Playstation 2. But don't be fooled; this isn't a traditional role-playing game, but rather a fun, wall-to-wall action hack-'n'-slash adventure in the mould carved by Gauntlet and the storied Diablo series--one that nonetheless conforms to the 3rd Edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons ruleset.

The game casts you as one of three basic characters: an elf sorceress, a human archer or a dwarf fighter. And from there you're set free inside a huge Dungeons & Dragons world replete with dungeons, forests, ice caves and much more. Naturally, it's all filled to the brim with horrible monsters, wicked traps, treasures and fabled magical weapons. As you go, you're constantly rewarded with new weaponry, new monsters to fight and experience points you can put into your character stats to get even more powerful. You can swap out equipment in an inventory "paper-doll" screen, and those changes are reflected in your onscreen character so you'll start with simple weapons and a drab look, and you'll look like a big, mean superhero by the end of the game.

The graphics are simply wonderful and the controls are accurate, responsive and fun to use--necessary for the constant hacking and slashing required. It gets all the more fun when you recruit a buddy and play the game in cooperative mode. --Bob Andrews

An excellent adventure.

First the bad news, this has very little to do with the PC game other than name and world settings.

Ok that over with if you play this game with no expectations of a deep RPG then I am sure you will enjoy it. The graphics are very good and extremely smooth. Sound is a bit lacking but when it matters it does help the atmosphere.

Game play wise it is very reminiscent of Diablo but perhaps without that games polish. There are three playable characters with an additional one to unlock. Levelling up your character is fun as is finding unique armour and weapons. The game is best enjoyed questing with friends.

Overall a very enjoyable game.

So your thinking of buying this game well its a great game, me and my freind loved it, we played 2 player , i advise u to go multiplayer, for the game is relitavly hard, the graphics are world class, music lets you down, gameplay is mint. i seriously advise this game to u all. After completing it, buy the second one.

action with depths just as it should be
okay first of all i would like to say that i am an FFgamer meaning that i gennerally when i think rpg i think FF or alike this is nothing liek FF yet it is still great the only comparing is that both have great stories and both makes you want to do it all over again reight after you finish about the game you start by chocing between a archer a socere or a drawf each with varyiets strengts and weakness then the game start you start out in a litle town where you first job is to kill a bunch of rats not very exceting is but i gets better you get to fight knights giants orgers trolls and more and you are doing it with a great line of weaponery sharp club heavy bows and sorts and onlike most i ahve played in this one you have a say in how you stats are raised when you level up a great feathur i mean when you think about how many games where you are pissed over that some charaters arent getting any better stronger or so and the story is filed with both damsels in destress whichs and other evil the story spand acordingly to what you have choosen so your chosie have a saying in other then what you are going to be best at and one of my favorit things is that it is possibel to co operat with a friend i defendtly recommend it
