There aren’t many games which list a critique of objectivism as one of its selling points, but then Bioshock isn’t like other games. Indeed the only titles it can easily be compared to are System Shock and its sequel, to which this is a spiritual successor. Instead of being set in a derelict space ship though the game’s story involves you exploring a mysterious underwater city after a plane crash. The city had been created as an art deco paradise for the intellectual elite but is now in ruins and populated only by grotesque mutants – both physically and mentally.

Although at first sight the game appears to be a first person shoot ‘em-up it is not primarily an action game. Your goal is survival, not extermination, with ammunition limited and many enemies far more powerful than yourself. You are able to upgrade your abilities though, both physical and psychic, by collecting Adam – the mutagen which was the cause of the disaster in the first place. Even so the best way to defend yourself is to play the creatures and environments against themselves, tricking one group into fighting against another or taking control of security robots and devices.

The game gives you full freedom to play the game exactly as you want, while at the same time creating a living world which carries on with or without you – with many creatures not even bothering to acknowledge you unless you attack them. With stunning graphics, especially the water effects, and an extremely disturbing atmosphere this could well be the most intelligently macabre video game ever made.

Manufacturer's Description
BioShock is the "genetically enhanced" first person shooter that lets you do things never before possible in the genre: turn everything into a weapon, biologically mod your body with plasmids, hack devices and systems, upgrade your weapons and craft new ammo variants, and experiment with different battle techniques in an incredible and unique underwater city.

You are a cast-away in Rapture, an underwater Utopia torn apart by civil war. Caught between powerful forces, and hunted down by genetically modified splicers and deadly security systems, you have to come to grips with a deadly, mysterious world filled with powerful technology and fascinating characters. No encounter ever plays out the same, and no two gamers will play the game the same way.

BioShock is loaded with some of greatest, most modifiable weapons to ever blast their way into a shooter. But guns alone won't be enough to defeat the devious AIs of Rapture. There are literally hundreds of other strategies players can use to take out his enemies.

I wouldn't say it was 'fun' as such but it is a great game!4
I'm not usually a fan of mindless shooting\fighting\survival horror type games (sorry people but Halo etc just doesnt float my boat') but this is different. Ok it does involve a whole load of shooting people with various weapons but it also has a very deep story line. I think it was the story that got me hooked - i liked the whole ruined city under the sea idea. I also found the people in the game creepy...not creepy like the zombies in Resident Evil but creepy because they were more human like. The story unfolds at a decent pace as you find audio recordings, video clips and diary type entries along your way. Slowly you start to understand your place in the story.

Visually i loved the city! with its strange posters and overgrown sections. The fact the whole place is stuck on New Years eve just adds to the atmosphere.

There is a lot of killing to be done - whether it be the HUGE Big Daddies (they noise they make goes right though me!) or the strange residents. As well as good ole guns, knifes etc you also have these 'Plasmids' which give you a special power like shooting fire or ice. This makes things more interesting.

I've not finished the game yet but intent to play though to the end just to see what happens!.

Fun!5
I don't know why but it took me until a couple of weeks ago to buy this. For less than 15£ from a seller on here, Bioshock is easily the best buy for my Xbox360. And i'd argue its the best game of the console altogether.

The game starts with you floating in the middle of the atlantic ocean, watching the tail end of a plane sink to the depths. Immediately you want to know what this is all about. You swim to a conveniently-near lighthouse, and inside is a bathysphere, the door to an underworld city called Rapture. From there on you find yourself in a horrific world, where you have to do fight with equally horrific creatures, and put your trust in one of the few sane people remaining, and in ADAM - a mutagen, giving you powerful abilities such as telekinises and freeze.

The story is brilliant, you'd struggle to find one better. Throughout the game you learn about what Rapture is, who Andrew Ryan is, and why everything has gone very wrong. You then have to make your own choice which affects the difficulty of the game, and the ending. Again this is about the ADAM. Eventually you learn the truth about how you found Rapture, or how it found you.

I just expected a FPS with a decent story, but its so much more than your typical FPS. The fact that you never see the face or hear the voice of the sole playable character didn't bother me at all, and maybe its because that person is you, especially given that your choices affect Jack and what he becomes at the end. Along with MGS4 i consider this to be my best experience on either console. But in terms of gameplay and great fun, this has to be #1 for me. I could play this for hours, i don't think i've ever been as disappointed for a game to end as i did here. But having spent so little in comparison to CoD4, MGS4, GTA4 and all the other big name titles, i am extremely satisfied with Bioshock.

MINT GRAPHICS, MINT GAME PLAY, MINT GAME!!!!!5
