Not really bad but not good. Went down the wrong road and isn't to the same quality of previous instalments
Visualy I have no problem with it. Yes it's dated but I don't mind. Engine does seem more optimised and runs a dream on mine (Vista x64 Ulti,PD945,4GB,GF7950gt512mb) and I think they have crammed more special effect into this but even if this was the newest greatest looking game out it still wouldn't get a good review from me.
As others mention the story is a bit, meh and all the 'new' stuff here really doesn't add much. Doesn't have nearly as much atmosphere or scare but has a couple of moments. The action and scare doesn't blend and for most of it have no idea what it all about I'm just going round shooting. This is a great deal to do with they've made it much more a fast shooter.
Probably the most defining thing about the original FEAR was the awesome AI and thus incredible firefights. Here I think they went the way of multiplayer version, went for on-line elite-ish speed fights and uped the damage of the weapons a LOT. Just 2-3 hits is enough to kill you and most the early enemies are the same so its all over far to quickly and quite frustrating. Armour is pointless. The ai doesn't come out and it isn't as much fun. Then you get to the later elite enemies that are over powered... 2-3 hit your dead but they can take a couple direct grenades, whole clip and mele combat to take 1 down. It's like everyone's getting turned into super soldiers and and it's screwed it all up.
Not that it's hard, it's just not fun any more.
Gatling gun take to long to rev up so useles, and too inaccurate. Laser gun Kooel. Expect to chop people in half. New assault rifle feels awful with not enough power and too much recoil zoomed in and then no visible recoil when not zoomed. Heads do fly though.
The dell advertising really got on my nerves at times.
Anyway I'll agree with Thavmasio. Still far better than the pathetic hand holding walk-through blindfolded experience of HL2;ep3
Would be nice...if it worked
Having played the first two installments of FEAR, I was quite looking forward to this. Sadly, it just didn't work on PC. I presume there must be a problem with the format of the disk (some sort of copyright protection they've introduced, I presume). The first copy spun endlessly in my drive without any sign of being recognised by the PC. I sent it back and got a replacement, but the same result ! I've played Half Life (all episodes), Doom III, Quake IV, BioShock and many others on this PC, but I couldn't get this to work. I tried upgrading the firmware on my DVD drive, but it still didn't work.
My DVD drive is a Sony DVD RW-G120A. Best to check with the game's publishers if they support your drive. You might be lucky.
If you liked the original F.E.A.R. you won't like this.
I'm sorry that this does not follow the other reviews in giving this game an amazing review, but from playing the first two titles in this series the Perseus Mandate has taken this game the wrong way.
It's obvious that this third title in the series has been made with purely console players in mind, where the other title(s) were slow story building horror/thriller based games, the Persues Mandate is just a fast dull FPS, with some utterly terrible "squad" based action thrown in to keep console players busy.
The other main problem with this game is that the engine simply can not handle outdoor landscapes and the Perseus Mandate has far too many of these for its own good. The voice acting is terrible and has just been thrown on top as an after thought.
The Perseus Mandate has ruined a fantastic series, where Extraction Point left it all hanging for what should have been brilliant expansion/sequel. The only hope is that Monolith sees the error they have made and go back to the originals roots if there is to be another title in the series forthcoming.
