Great experience - poor packaging.4

Further to my earlier review below this game has just been patched and now works superbly. It's worth the investment at last and very effective.
The GUI has been sorted out and the code fully revised. It's not crashed on me after 3 hours of play at 1900x1200 and fully maxed. Great stuff!

UT3 is good but seriously flawed at the moment. It's full of bugs, crashed during the settings section initially (character creation) and crashed with a non GPU (ie code) related error a moment ago. The GUI is appalling. I'd heard it was poor but it looks like it's been done as a placeholder before the designers get near it and by a junior developer! The game is occasionally jerky and clunky BUT it has fantastic potential. It's very involving, far more immersive than the previous version and looks good. Give it a patch or two and it'll be amazing! My review also concerns the packaging of the so called 'Special Edition'. A cheaper metal box would be hard to imagine. I've had poor quality biscuits in more metal! Also my box had a large scratch on the front, right over the graphics and courtesy of the factory because it was still shrink wrapped. Very poor quality control indeed! Amazon will be replacing it forthwith (please). Inside the box is a small hard covered book (so small I missed it when first I looked) containing artwork. It's nice but nothing 'special'. You also get a DVD with guides to the level editor (would you not look at an online guide?) and a history of UT. The latter might be fun but I've not had a chance to view it yet.
I'm tempted to say get the non 'special' edition.

Awesome5
Bought this game and have been hooked since. As well as online, there is also offline game play in case if you don't want to play with others via the internet. Graphics wise, it's amazing. If you have a powerful spec machine, play it at high res with maximum detail.

Both the normal and collector edition contain the Unreal editor which I wanted to learn to create my own maps. Main reason for buying the collector edition is that they include video tutorials to teach you the basics. The collector edition also comes in a tin box with an art book. To tell you the truth, it's nothing major. I've seen much better collector versions than this. If you're into the game and do not want to learn about the editor then get the normal version.

THE ABSOLUTE GAME OF THE YEAR!!!5
Games that are as long awaited as UT3 always bear the inherent danger of becoming over-hyped and to inevitably disappoint in the end. Well, this is NOT the case with this game. UT3 ROCKS!

Graphically you have not seen anything that beautiful this year! Surfaces, shadows and explosions are just GORGEOUS! Yes, I liked the graphics even more than those in CRYSIS (and I gave CRYSIS a raving review - check it out if you like): they are crisper and more atmospheric.

Fans of the UT-series will meet again all our old ...friends: the Bio Rifle, the Link Gun, the Shock Rifle, the Flak Cannon (my favorite!), the Rocket Launcher and the Sniper Rifle. New additions are the Enforcer (to replace the under-used Assault rifle) and the Impact Hammer (replacing the shield gun). An interesting twist: hitting an enhanced target with the Impact Hammer's alternative fire will drop his power-up for you to grab!
SuperWeapons are also at our disposal, both the Redeamer and the new Target Painter.

The number of available vehicles has been enriched as well. Besides the Axon vehicles from UT2004 (which have been renovated), a new Necris set is available: vehicles that demonstrate novel behaviors, yet are beautifully balanced with the Axon set.

What is really impressive once more are the environments. You have to see them to believe them...! And the skies...! I have not seen more breathtaking skies ever since, well, the original UNREAL.

Since this is a pretty demanding game, once the rockets start flying do not trust that by meeting the Minimum requirements your system can handle this. So, here are the official RECOMMENDED requirements:
* 2.4GHz Dual-Core Processor
* 1GB of RAM
* nVIDIA 7800GTX OR ATI x1300 GFX-card
* 8 GB of free HDD space
(on either WinXp (SP2) or WinVISTA)

This is the Collector's edition mind you, so check the list provided (in the product description above) to decide whether it worth the extra $10.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!
