A quality monitor with a clear, crisp digital image4
Looking around the online market place I found a number of monitors available between 19 and 22 inch. I initially opted for an Acer AL1916W, which gained good reviews on a number of sites. I bought it knowing that is was not DVI however I was disappointed in using it with no DVI and only VGA and a sub standard picture and problems displaying 1440x900 so replaced the Acer unit with the Samsung SM940BW as a friend and Personal Computing Magazine recommended it.

Additionally I bought a Belkin DVI-D cable (Belkin F2E4141b10-DD - DVI Flat Panel Replacement Cable) as the monitor is supplied with a VGA and DVI-I cable (not mentioned in some literature) which were not compatible with my NVIDIA GeForce GO 7600 graphics card.

Out of the box I like the tilt / height adjustment which allows the top of the monitor to be at eye level as recommended on DSE regulations (office based health & safety). I like the cable tidy at the back and the rotating disk base. This base is handy to rotate the screen to show the contents to friends / family when discussing an item.

The image displayed out of the box is too bright, although this is not a Samsung fault, all manufacturers have their settings set too high and it is a trick of trade to make their images appear crisp on store shelves, which you do not need in your home. I reduced brightness from 100 to 75 and contrast from 75 to 45. This gives softer whites, allows you to see shading / selection bands of grey color and gives good crisp colors / images on photo and video.

I used my NVIDIA Desktop Manager to alter settings / resolution / etc. not Samsung Magic Tune. I did not use Samsung Magic Color as this sets the colors too bright and the whites too white, I preferred manual settings mentioned earlier.

A quality monitor with easy to use menus and a clear, crisp digital image

Samsung SyncMaster 940BW review5
I bought this off amazon and it was sent from Germany by Avides_media. Excellent communication from both parties and it arrived 4 days after I ordered it. Nicely packaged and easy to set up. NO DEAD PIXELS AT ALL. Very bright (I've turned it down to 50%), crystal clear and sharp. This is a very good picture indeed and HD ready too! As for games, HL2 is a dream on widescreen. Colours are rich and there is no ghosting whatsoever. No built in speakers which is good news as they're rubbish anyway so the money has all gone on the screen. Sexy, stylish and superb value, well done Samsung! Get one with no reservations. You will not be disapointed, just make sure your graphic card can cope with 1440 by 900.

Works well on Macs too.4
Bought for a older G4 Mac the unit allows for both analogue and digital connections (in my case analogue). The screen is well built and feels robust - I particularly like the height adjustment. The cables wrap around a neat hook at the rear of the screen and makes for a tidy desk. The Mac (of course) recognised the monitor straight away so, like all Mac users, I threw away the drivers CD. The monitor seems happiest at a resolution of 1440 x 900 and, even though the Mac is at least 7 years old, the screen and OSX work well together. Like one of the other reviewers commented the screen default is set too high for my liking and I turned off the "Magic colour" and set my own preferences.

It took a while to get used to the wide screen using the Mac as a computer but with DVDs it works very well indeed. No speakers but my own speakers would be superior to any built in ones anyway. A three year warranty also helps and while it may not be in the same league for resolution and crispness as Mac screens, it is not in the same price bracket either. You'd want to spend more if you used your Mac for design and graphics work but for normal use and games it is a well priced, well built unit.
