Chemical smell and taste?
As the previous reviewer has stated this kettle produces a very unpleasant, very strong chemical smell and taste in the water boiled from it.
I received the kettle at the beginning of December (2008) and bizarely the smell and taste is getting stronger.
I contacted Morphy Richards direct who initially tried to fob me of by suggesting boiling only enough water for the number of cups I required and then emptying any excess?!
To me this sounds like a design flaw where the plastic concealed element cover inside the kettle is leaching some kind of chemical into the water - not good!
They have agreed to send a replacement however if this has the same problem I will be asking for a full refund.
Watch this space!
Update: The replacement kettle I received has the same problem, i.e. the bitter chemical taste - emptying any excess water after each and every use seems to help a bit but this is clearly a design flaw - avoid!
Good kettle!
I was surprised when reading the previous reviews- I'm very pleased with this kettle: it's very quick to boil whether full or near empty! It's a little noisey on start-up but rapid boil has to have rapid heat-up so I'm not surprised. The on/off lever does get knocked on by mistake sometimes but that's only when I allow my worktop to clutter around the kettle area! All-in-all so good that I shall be buying a second one since we have managed to scratch the paintwork! We have a limescale problem here and even that doesn't cause a great problem - perhaps the colour helps mask it a little(!?) but the scale comes out when I rinse the kettle and the spout has hardly any sign of it.
Persistent Chemical Taste
We've had this kettle for a week, and the good news is that it's quiet and quiet, and has a cool whistle when the water boils. The bad news is that no amount of rinsing and boiling with fresh water gets rid of the unsavory chemical taste that it taints the water with.
