High-energy workout providing a fun, effective way to do strength training!
I must admit I like my American workout DVDs - they tend to be more glamorous, more motivating and more aspirational. This DVD is a little different - it's less glam and more bootcamp really. Kelly Coffey-Meyer is a no fuss, hard-nosed kind of trainer that you can imagine would be right at home at the NYPD! But maybe that's exactly what you need in a trainer!
Kelly is motivating and the workout is challenging. There are actually two 30 minute workouts in this 60 minute DVD - the first focuses on back/legs/chest and the second biceps/triceps/shoulders. Both are also good for the waist. There is a warm-up and cool-down provided too (don't skip these as they are important!)
I could feel the benefits of the workout straight away. The DVD is suitable for all levels of strength training from beginner to advanced - you just vary the intensity of the workout by changing the weight of dumbbells you use - you need to have two sets of weights for the workout (one pair of dumbbells of a weight you are comfortable with and one single dumbbell that is the heaviest you can manage). I've started with a pair of 3kgs and a single 5kg although a good weight combination for beginners may be something like 1.5kg & 3kG - if you are not sure what to lift, the best thing to do is get to a sporting goods shop and feel what the weights are really like to lift or alternatively you could buy a set of three or six so you have a variety to choose from. I already do a lot of cardio and wanted something that would specifically help me with the strength training - this is one of the few DVDs I found that is completely devoted to this type of training and one of the best in terms of enjoyment and effectiveness.
A few downsides to note: firstly although the DVD is suitable for all levels, I would say that it's not really suitable for the absolute beginner - it's OK if you've never done any resistance work before but it's not ideal if you've never done any kind of exercise before. The reason I say this is that Kelly assumes you have some knowledge of how to exercise safely; the proper way to do squats, hold weights etc and no specific guidance is given if you don't know these things. Secondly (a small complaint) the DVD is cut a little poorly - it is clear it has been filmed all in one go as a 60 minute continuous workout but we can't actually play it this way which is odd - we have to play the warm-up, workout 1, workout 2 and cool-down all separately.
Overall I really liked the workouts - they are fun and effective. They are also progressive because YOU get to customize the degree of difficulty involved in the workout. There is no real plateau and you don't ever outgrow the DVD because you just increase the weight you lift whenever your current weight becomes too easy so even over time the exercises are still just as effective! I'm a big fan of Tae-Bo and similar workouts and these '30 minute to Fitness' workouts, although different in style, really compliment my existing routines. A real must-buy if you want a fun way to get into strength training!
This workout is great!!!!!
I purchased this Dvd about a month ago and think it is brilliant. I use it 3 times aweek for 30 minutes a session. I have already noticed fantastic results. It is hard work but well worth it. Ladies if you fancy using free weights and dont want to go to the gym get this Dvd now. Kelly is straight to the point and you dont have time to stop and think of anything else. Well worth the money.
Variety is the Spice of Life
This is the perfect DVD to have as part of your collection. The brilliant thing about it is that you will never really "grow out of it" since you have the option of increasing your resistance each workout. I wouldn't recommend this workout for an absolute beginner who has never done any form of resistance training before although it is a brilliant way to build a foundation although if you haven't done this type of training before I would recommend starting with light weights and building yourself up from there. Kelly is an excellent instructor who gets right down to it. Her instructions are clear and concise and the moves are easy to follow. What makes it more challenging is of course how hard you are prepared to work and how much more you can lift. This is a completely different type of training and it is amazing how much work you feel you have done in such a short period of time - 30 minutes does seem like an eternity! I only started yesterday and today my body is aching! I think this DVD is the best value for money - if you don't feel like doing the basic workouts for upper or lower body, then flick through the workout menu - there is a full body blast and a few other options to throw into the mix. You will never get bored! I highly recommend this DVD as it is well worth every penny.
