10 mins of hell - only for the seriously coordinated!!
I'm a bloke. I'll get that out the door straight away. I'm usually a gym-goer and some-time runner, so I'm reasonably fit (Chistmas-related spare tyre not withstanding....) so I figured this would be a piece of cake. I'd done my girlfriend's Davina McCall fitness DVD with her a couple of times when it was too cold for a run and the gym just seemed too far away, and whilst it was reasonably challenging and got me in to a good sweat, it was also fun and easily attainable. So I am not a total newbie at these things.
However, having gotten hold of this DVD, I thought we could both try it out together. How wrong I was! Within 30 secs of starting it up, I could instantly see I was out of my depth. The instructor moves at an incredible pace, hardly giving you time to master one move before she's already doing the next one. The moves are so complex and advanced that they are really only suitable for those who are naturally adept at such things or who have been going to aerobics classes since the 80s! My girlfriend used to do ballet and is quite well coordinated, but she struggled to keep up as well. Personally, I was a flailing mess.
Not only this, but the coreographer clearly thinks everyone lives in MASSIVE houses with gigantic living rooms, because some of the moves would require a space the size of a small sports hall to do!
If you have the patience to stick with it and learn the routines, I'm sure this would be a great work out, though I have to question the idea of doing 10 mins of excercise - who can be bothered to just do that? If I was going to the trouble of changing clothes, and then showering off after, I'd want at least 40 mins of excercise. You can of course chain the routines together, but then what's the point of calling it the 10 min Hot Body Workout?
Anyone who can stand this women's annoying American accent and upbeat attitude must have nerves of steel anyway....
Beginners beware!
Let me start by saying that I am extremely unfit and have never taken any excercise classes. Therefore, with the lure of only having to do 10 minutes a day I ordered this DVD with high hopes. However, I soon discovered that I can't keep up with the moves and was soon lost and well out of time with the instructor. At least it being at home I didn't feel too foolish and could always go back over the moves, but I didn't find this excercise routine as enjoyable as I'd hoped. Sadly, I have to put this DVD down as a failure for me as I found it for too difficult to keep pace.
Good for advanced exercisers
I was really looking forward to receiving this DVD to add to my library of other excellent 10 minute solutions DVDs, but after completing I am disappointed. I should have taken more notice of the title of this DVD - it really is a fast and furious bootcamp. I really wanted to like this DVD, but I didn't. I don't mind moving quickly to keep my heart rate up but the moves in this workout are way too fast. As a runner and avid DVD exerciser I consider myself pretty fit.
For instance, in one section (where you need hand held weight)s, the instructor literally lifts the weights up and does 3 reps, then puts the weights down again. I simply couldn't put my weights down quick enough. In the Butt Blaster segment you literally do 3 leg lifts on the hands and knees before you have to turn over onto your back and do 3 bum lifts, and then back to the leg lifts. I enjoyed the stretch exercises - there are some effective moves here - great for people who do sports.
The whole feel of the dvd is slightly chaotic, and some of the exercises look and feel difficult to execute. Its like the instructor is trying to show us how great she is coming up with these new exciting moves - whether or not they are effective or not. Overall, this DVD might be good for a competitive sports person to get some cross training in if its too cold/icy outside. Having done loads of different DVDs I know I won't get used to it, and I don't want to persist with it - so its back to the DVD shelf!
