Brilliant - won't need any other book
After searching through Amazon for a decent book on how to look after my beloved road bicycle I finally settled on Zinn and am glad to say that I am delighted with this book. It covers pretty much everything, from basic emergency repairs to complex workshop stuff. Great layout, lots of diagrams and a sense of humour. If you're getting serious about your cycling and want to know how look after and repair your bike this is great. Also has calculations for things like frame sizes and an excellent trouble-shooting table. I love it!
Best bike maintenance book I've read
I have been looking for a detailed book on road bike maintenance for a while and bought this on the back of a Velonews recommendation.
I am a hack mechanic able to bodge jobs on the basic bits of the bike however, with the guidance in this book I have been able to, and more importantly confident to completely strip down and rebuild my Audax bike (27 sp STI setup) and fixed gear commuter.
If you are handy with a spanner and willing to give it a go I think that this book enables you to save substantial sums on shop maintenance with confidence. The text is clear and the exploded illustrations make detail work much easier. I have not seen a better bike maintenance book and cannot think of any information missing that I would need to carry out any maintenance or build up job.
Almost perfect
In fact, probably the best book about road bike maintenance. Barnett's is bigger and a bit more detailed (good for LBS, not necessarily so for single bike-lovers): but, in many cases, Zinn is not only easier to follow, but also more effective. It has some flaws (e.g. not so detailed about wheel truing), but they are minor ones. I recommend this book, really.
