A good basic guide to walks in the Alpujarra.

Product Description

The Alpujarra is a dramatic part of Andalucia in Southern Spain. Terraced farmland, dramatic mountains and ancient Moorish villages provide the perfect environment for walkers who love to experience Spain at its wildest and most authentic - far away from the populous "costas". The region has come to prominence recently with the best-seller "Driving Over Lemons" (Chris Stewart). Though seemingly remote, it is easy to reach from both Granada in the north and from all of the coastal resorts along the Costa del Sol. So this really is a chance to get away from it all! Jeremy Rabjohns lives in the Alpujarra and has been leading walks there for 15 years. His book contains 27 walks from 5 to 25km based on villages typical of the region. No other guide is as accurate or up-to-date as this - and scarcely any other book provides such an abundance of background information, which can only be appreciated by exploring the Alpujarra on foot. An exploration of Granada is included - demonstrating that there is more to discover than the famous Alhambra.

Good Introduction to the area.4
I purchased this book prior to a visit in the Alpujarra - a region that I had never visited. My experience was that Jeremy Rabjohns's book proved to be a concise introduction to the area.
In its introduction the book provides a good thumbnail sketch of the region, e.g.its food and drink, its customs and history. For me it provided the right amount of detail.
The walking section of the guide contains clear, accurate route descriptions. Walks covering a wide area are included, not just those in the Poqueira Valley and La Taha. The sketch maps are very helpful but I would still advise that they be used with a map of the area.

Holiday Walks in the Alpujarra (Holiday Walks Series)5
We have recently returned from a week's holiday in the Alpujarra where we used this book extensively. Jeremy's book greatly enhanced our enjoyment of this quite lovely area. His route descriptions were faultless and made the walks quite easy and consequently even more enjoyable than we had anticipated. If felt as if we were walking alongside an experienced leader and his local tips about where to find things were amazingly accurate. You can tell that this book has been written by someone who really knows the area and is very keen to share his knowledge with you, the reader. Highly recommended to walkers visiting this area.

Excellent guide to this fantastic region5
This book provides a wonderfully detailed guide to a number of fantastic walks in the alpujarras. I found it invaluable in both the planning of my trip and as handy trail side refernce. Each walk is accompanied by a map and is described in fantastic detail and the authors insight into various cultural, gastronomical and historical quirks of the region make it a thouroughly useful and enjoyable read. Highly recommended.
