Editorial Reviews
Amazon.co.uk Review
This is a surprising disappointment, considering it is the third film from director Danny Boyle, writer John Hodge and actor Ewan McGregor. This disjointed and strained romantic comedy is not even near the same league as Trainspotting and Shallow Grave. Cameron Diaz is a spoiled heiress and McGregor an aimless janitor brought together by two angels (Holly Hunter and Delroy Lindo) hoping to hang onto their wings. McGregor kidnaps Diaz, the boss's daughter, after being fired from his crummy job. She is not all that averse to being snatched. Most of the laughs are lost to a scattershot story that feels preposterous instead of magical. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Synopsis
Petulant, rich honeypie Celine and scruffily adorable janitor Robert find themselves on the road to romance after he kidnaps her to avenge his termination at the hands of her callous father. But what they don't realize is that their love is celestially predetermined, as a pair of gun-toting angels gives chase to force the issue. A quixotic and inconsistent Hollywood debut from the production team of director Boyle, writer John Hodge, and producer Andrew MacDonald ("Shallow Grave" and "Trainspotting").

Average predictable fantasy romantic comedy
With McGregor (Star Wars, Trainspotting) and Diaz (My best friend's wedding, Gangs of New York) I thought that this would be a sure-fire hit, and with only a few memorable scenes, it was far from it.
McGregor stars as self-contained Rob Lewis who never has the ambition to get what he truly wants; he never puts himself on the line for what he needs. On a meeting with his boss' daughter, McGregor's character wants to start a new life and through these two different characters comes an interesting ideology of a wonderful love story.
With McGregor's character stubborn, afraid and unappreciative and Diaz's character a snobbish, confidant and elegant female do we see two different personalities collide and allow the story to become interesting as the two try to get along. Both actors are sensational in their roles but unfortunately can't perform well enough to make the film great. There is no doubt over the acting, it's just the story that really let's this 1997 fantasy comedy down
It's interesting to watch because it isn't a normal conventional romantic tale but that's all its worth watching for: the acting and an interesting scenario. The whole fantasy elements about people coming down from heaven are ridiculous and are never necessary. A lot of character elements are also unnecessary such as when McGregor is taken into the woods coming towards the end, ridiculous.
It's a corny story which is easy enough for the target audience, older presumably, to understand. The jokes are often very clichéd and predictable. One great scene however is when Diaz and McGregor are in the telephone box which had me laughing.
It's worth watching if you like character relationships. By combining two different personalities the film is able to engage the viewers but is inconsistent and the fantasy elements ruin it completely, not really worth it.

A Very Silly Film
Although I enjoyed this film I found it the plot making excursions into the ridiculous which made it difficult to engage my attention. That said, it's good entertainment but it's not one I'd watch again and again.
A Life Less Ordinary Would Be Boring
"Robert: Right you asshole, I've got your daughter here, and I'm gonna send her back in pieces if... OH! I'm sorry, madam. No, I haven't got your daughter here; I've got someone else's. No, we're not married. Yes, I've read the same thing, it's very hard to find suitable young men these days. Well, I'm sure your daughter's very nice, in principle I've got no objection to meeting her...
Celine hangs up the phone
Robert: What is the problem?"
Robert, Ewen McGregor, has kidnapped Celine, Carmeron Diaz, for ransom, and he really doesn't have a plan. Celine has to prod him along and teach him how to ask for ransom. This is a cosmic entry into the movie of no ordinary man. During the long time awaiting the ransom Celine and Robert hit it off. Celine wants to leave her family and in particular her father, and this is her way out. However, she had not planned on falling for her kidnapper. Celine, takes action and she really is the strong and comedic part of this movie. Their adventures begin anew and some of them are side splittingly (sp) funny. How will they begin their new life? Where is the ransom money and how in Hell do they get rid of Holly Hunter, she just won't die !
There is a scene in the dentist's office that is laugh out loud funny. Your worse nightmare of what a visit to the dentist would be. A dentist with his head wrapped in gauze, the result of a terrible accident, who will fill a cavity without novacaine, becasue after all, "You'll probably pass out from pain anyway!"
And, Elvis Presley singing, "You Were Always On My Mind", is such a romantic touch as Celine and Robert meet. And then "If I Were Your Woman and You Were My Man" while they decide if they are really meant for each other. Absurd and irrational, yes, but then, the entire movie is one for the books!
