Amazon.co.uk Review
Peter Kosminsky's 1992 adaptation of Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights goes to the extreme of casting Sinead O'Connor in a brief bit as Bronte herself, but the film still doesn't approach the accomplishment of William Wyler's classic 1939 production (with Laurence Olivier and Merle Oberon) or subsequent versions by Luis Bunuel and Robert Fuest. That doesn't make it unwatchable, however: it still offers The English Patient costars Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche as doomed lovers Heathcliff and Cathy. Binoche is a bit washed-out, but Fiennes makes a strong impression as the rejected labourer who makes his fortune and exacts a vengeance. Unlike Wyler's film, this one covers all the chapters of Bronte's book, but it is sodden with misery and lacks all grace. --Tom Keogh
Synopsis
A sweeping, epic production of Emily Bronte's classic tale of star-crossed lovers Cathy (Juliette Binoche) and Heathcliff (Ralph Fiennes), whose passionate love and tragic separation plays out against the verdant Yorkshire moors. Whereas most film adaptations of WUTHERING HEIGHTS end with the death of Cathy, this version presents the complete novel and continues the fateful consequences of the doomed love affair as it resonates throughout two generations of the Earnshaw and Linton families.

simply the best version
I'm a bit of die hard WH fan and have seen all the versions. So if you loved the romantic Laurence Olivier version of WH then don't bother watching this. If you thought Laurence simply WAS heathcliff then im afraid you have never really read the book.
Quite simply put, Ralph Fiennes is Emily Bronte's Heathcliff. Heathcliff isnt meant to be a mills and boon hollywood hero, he has been twisted and shaped by forces in his life into this cruel shadow of a man. Heathcliff is all about passion and revenge. Byronic hero anyone? the whole point of Heathcliff was as a warning... love like theirs is fine within the pages of a book, but to actually pursue this man in real life? isabella is a stark warning to women everywhere
so why then would you want to see a sugar coated heathcliff? He bloody well isnt Mr.Darcy!!
that said i didnt love juliette Binoche or think alot of her portrayal of cathy... but the rest of the cast were stellar... a must see for any wuthering heights fan or student of the novel, even just to cast a critical eye.
All over the place
Once again, all looked very promising - the cast, the director, the settings, the material....and all turned out good in their own right but just not together. The result - misplaced, miscast, misdirected. Binoche is totally confused, and there is no chemistry between her and Ralph Fiennes who is good but just not Heathcliff. So, what we are presented with is another director's lavish fantasy very loosely based on amazing Emily Bronte's novel.
What heights?
Perhaps director Peter Kosminsky was going through his nihilistic phase when he made this so called adaptation. You wouldn't find so far removed from England a view of the Emily Bronte's world as this. He succeeded in the fight with the wonderful material and defeated all that the original novel offers. Right from the beginning and all the way through the film you hear the music which is a mix from the soundtracks of Terminator and Ronin; Yorkshire is unrecognisable; and even Binoche and Fiennes, otherwise great actors, look terrified and amazed probably by the inability to open up and act under the so timid direction. I also found it impossible to follow the story. Positives? Hmm... Cannot find right now. Phenomenally awful. Dont waist your time and money.
