Very Suprised
I'd heard and read so much about this underground trilogy before finally seeing it; mostly i was told it was simply a trashy pretentious load of garbage - by people who either hadn't seen it or only very small parts a long time ago.
So i wasn't excecting brilliance, i mean it's Warhol cinema it's hardly going to be rivitting, right?
But how wrong could i be!!! The first film 'Flesh deal's with Joe (Dallesandro looking particularly beautiful) The Hustler in a "day in the life" sort of way; which is full of endless brilliant moment's like when he's with superstar Candy Darling etc, and the time he's posing for a ridiculously weird elderly artist. The visuals are suprisingly well done too for what is essentially known as trash cinema.
The second film 'Trash' shows a far less cool Joe as an untalkative impotent heroin addict "married" to a "girl" who just wants a peaceful homelife. Similar in many ways to Flesh it features frequent bizarre encounters with Warhol regulars and other scum-like people who are absolutely fascinating to watch.
'Heat' is far more like a narrative film than the previous two, and features Dallesandro as an actor struggling to find work while relaxing at a beach hotel; he meets a crazy girl but ends up involved in a sexual relationship with her mother - once a big star and desperate for attention again. This film plays out very much along the lines of 'Sunset Boulevard'(1950), but with plenty of sex and trashiness.
The picture quality in all three film's is outstanding and was supervised by Morrisey himself (Warhol himself only supplied actors and actresses for the film, we still have to wait to get one of his films on dvd). There are some particularly amusing commentaries with a psychologist and some critics; and introductions to all the films by Morrisey himself.
Overall i don't think i could rate each film individually as each has it own amount of genius, but i definately would say that this (fully uncut) boxset is a must buy to anyone who collects dvds, and that we should be truly thankful this has actually been released on dvd in the first place!
5 stars nevertheless
This box set is excellent value and the transfer to DVD is first rate. Of course, it is a must in the collection of those interested in the history of the cinema. The movies themselves?
Well, "Flesh" is exceptional and Dallesandro's performance is touching. It gets the 5 stars. "Trash" is, well, interesting and trashy. Dallesandro as a heroin addict is not given much scope except to look doped out of his skull most of time. But "Heat" gets 5 stars as well for being really ghastly, badly acted and scripted! It has been seen as the best of the three but is only worth a look to see how unredeemingly bad it actually is. Both "Trash" and "Heat" appear to be trading off the sheer brilliance of "Flesh".
