Excellent Shooter for PSP!
The Godfather game comes to the PSP and is actually very good. The missions are the same as in the PS2 version except for an additional side game made especially for the PSP version titled 'Mob Wars' which enables you to gain territory and extort business and other locations. Mob Wars is a good idea but the excellent story mode is what makes this game special.
The one thing which lets down the PSP version is the inability to free roam around the city and drive cars. In the missions themselves you are quite restricted in what you can actually do and you have to stay within the mission area at all times or else the mission will fail. Having said this the story mode is still very addictive indeed and the controls and handling in this PSP version are top notch and easy enough to master. The camera views let the game down on some missions and doesn't seem to keep up with you, especially in the later shooting missions which I found a pain to complete simply because of the poor camera views at times, but do not let this flaw put you off. The Godfather is one of the best shooting games on the PSP and the graphics are superb to match.
You can't free roam like in the PS2 version but you will still love this game.
Decent but as previously said, flawed
The fact this game lacks any roaming outside the story mode is a serious disappointment and let down. I completed the story mode and became the Don in less than a week - now I can't do anything more with this game. If you don't mind games that you can complete quickly, I would recommend because it is fun but it won't last you long.
Good fun & movie sequences but gamplay is flawed
This game is alot fun and has a decent learning curve as you progress through the missions. Cleverly these missions follow the film's progression, actually expanding on some of the film's scenes, and are complimented with a variety of well presented movie sequences. Indeed all of the cast have been converted well into the game with the one glaring, and perhaps crucial, exception of Michael Corleone. On paper the Mob Wars part of the game sounds pretty unappealing but it is highly addictive and there is a decent level of strategy involved as to what cards to play and when, what rackets to own and how to control & recruit your mobsters.
One very major flaw with this game is that the camera view doesnt not keep up with the movements of your character very well at all. It is all to easy to walk into a room and not be able to face or target the enemies in front of you, often resulting in your untimely death. All too often the auto targeting fails either by targeting the wrong enemy or not targeting at all, resulting in your mobster firing rounds into the floor. Free-aiming is very slow and not suitable as an method to change your view.
Quite simply the type of game engine and camera freedom employed in the GTA games would have been perfect. Secondly there is no freedom to roam on missions: you follow a rigid path and if you stray from your boundaries the mission abruptly ends.
On the whole worth a punt if you like the Godfather but the actual gameplay is made frustrating at times by a poor, unadjustable camera set-up.
