DVD Description
This Bronte BBC collection box set includes:
The Tenant Of Wildfell Hall (Dir. Mike Barker, 1996): This is the fantastic BBC adaptation of Anne Bronte's novel.
When Helen Graham becomes the new tenant of the dark, decaying Wildfell Halt, her independent spirit and radical views set her apart from the staid rural community around her. Gilbert Markham, a young farmer, finds himself powerfully drawn to her and a series of dramatic events brings them closer together. But the enigmatic Mrs Graham's unconventional life and behaviour disguise a hidden past with many secrets, secrets the world of Victorian England would rather bury forever...
Jane Eyre (Dir. Julian Amyes, 1983): This is the superb BBC production of Charlotte Bronte's novel.
Jane Eyre (Zelah Clarke) is a mistreated orphan who learns to survive by relying on her independence and intelligence. Her first job in the outside world is governess to the ward of Mr. Rochester (Timothy Dalton), a man of many secrets and mercurial moods. The tentative trust between them slowly develops into romance, but their hopes for happiness will soon be jeopardized by a terrible secret.
Wuthering Heights (Dir. Peter Hammond, 1978):
Emily Bronte's classic tale of all-consuming love. When Mr. Earnshaw encounters Heathcliff, a ragamuffin orphan, he kindly brings the boy into his home and makes him part of the family. And from the start, Heathcliff falls hopelessly in love with the daughter of the house, the beautiful, headstrong Catherine. She adores him, too, but when a wealthy neighbour woos her, Catherine's material instincts get the better of her, and she agrees to marry the man. However, Catherine discovers that she cannot forget Heathcliff so easily... and that not even death can make them part...
Synopsis

Customer Reviews
2 1/2 really rather than three.
I am half and half on this boxset as my taste for the classics and how they are portrayed differed entirely to what graced me on the screen. By far the Bronte sisters did not become famous for writing like the lovely romanic era of beautiful dresses, dashing men and flashy balls. The bronte sisters leaned more towards Thomas Hardys way of dipiction and this boxset certainly hits you right in the face with it... possibly even worse than Mr. Hardy himself.
It is gothic, dark and overpowering but if you like your films and classics with a hit of the dark side this is the box set for you. Be warned though, this is the old verisons of the tales so the actors speak in.. how can I put this "ye ol' English" basically they don't speak in modern tongue. It is a "thou for art.." sort of kick to it. So if your not so brilliant, up to scratch or have no clue what people are saying when they talk like this and don't know about the story either Please don't buy it, you will be lost before it has even begun.
Now for you acolites out there, if your are into your gothic, dark, hard hitting oldly worldly pictures, buy it you will like. Don't be expecting great picture though as not only is the wording, tale and costumes old so is the picturing... there is no HD in this boxset. The films are old.
Hence the 2 and a 1/2 its not good but its not bad either, it depends on your taste.
3 for 1 - Bronte not Charlotte set
Firstly, Charlotte wrote Jane Eyre and her sister Anne wrote Wildfell Hall and Emily's lone work Wuthering Heights!
Secondly this is the Dalton version of Jane Eyre and the current Tara Fitzgerald/Toby Stephens version of Wildfell, Wuthering I'm not sure as haven't seen that one yet. So this set would be most useful if you were wanting those versions. I give it three because I was disapointed with Jane Eyre, and I quite like two other versions of Wuthering Heights (also new ones due out) - although I did think Wildfell despite itself being a decade old was done very well and still holds well. Please don't lump all these into Charlotte territory though, give true recognition to the other sisters where due!
misleading
The most recent adaption on this dvd is a decade old and the other two are twenty years old and personally i would wait for the fantastic new bbc jane eyre dvd which comes out in february.
