Amazon.co.uk Review
Continuing the BBC's unrivalled reputation for costume drama, their new adaptation of Jane Eyre proved to be one of the television triumphs of 2006. Based, as you'd expect, on the Charlotte Bronte book of the same name, this two-disc set brings together the full series, spread across the best part of four sumptuous hours.
It's a faithful adaptation, with Ruth Wilson giving an exceptional performance in the title role. Mr Rochester's boots, meanwhile, are filled by Toby Stephenson, and both prove to be wise choices. Backed up by an excellent supporting cast, they're also supported by some quite superb scenery, warm photography and skilful, at times neatly understated the direction, that gives the story space to develop.
Is the best adaptation of Jane Eyre? It certainly builds a compelling case, and while there's the odd slight misstep along the way, it's primarily a terrific interpretation of a classic romance. Perhaps the only real disappointment is that the DVD release itself doesn't offer more in the way of added features, but given the presentation and quality of the main attraction, that's unlikely, rightly, to deter those in search of some classic BBC drama. --Jon Foster
Synopsis
2006 adaptation of Charlotte Bronte's passionate and tender story of the love between a fiercely independent governess and her brusque, mysterious employer.

An appalling production
Why the BBC made this new 'Jane Eyre' when their 1983 production was truly the definitive one beats me. This new version is terrible and Ruth Wilson and Toby Stephens are totally miscast. Instead of being tiny and plain, but witty and piquant, this Jane is a great strapping sombre girl, solid, boring and completely lacking in humour, while Rochester looks far too young and handsome. Great chunks of the novel have been left out and the dialogue has been modernized and dumbed down, presumably to attract the mass of British teenagers who never open a book of any kind. Timothy Dalton and Zelah Clarke in the 1983 production were the perfect incarnations of Rochester and Jane and that version is completely faithful to the book and is definitely the one to buy!
One of the best adaptations ever...!!
One always forms a picture of characters in the books one reads - and very rarely are any visual adaptaptions anything like one's imagination. This version of Jane Eyre is one of the very few exceptions I feel. Toby Stephens was definitely my Mr Rochester. The one other actor who ever came close was Timothy Dalton - but I felt Toby Stephens showed a lot more depth, sensitivity, and vulnerbility which is the essence of Edward Rochester's character - and ironically - these characteristics are mirrored in Jane Eyre. They are the same. And Ruth Wilson too was perfectly cast - personifying the strength of Jane's character. In addition, there is a lot of subtle eroticisms in the book (I'm sure if the same type of story was written now, there's be a lot more bodice-wripping going on!!!) which is beautifully depicted. The BBC once again -showing it's raison d'etre.
Preciosa adaptación de un clásico
Toby Stephens es el mejor Rochester pero creo que prefiero a Samantha Morton como Jane Eyre.
