	The Crossing (Border Trilogy) (paperback) by Cormac McCarthy Buy new: £5.99 / Used from: £1.25 A sparse and poetic journey of youth and lost innocence. Heartbreaking.
	Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee: An Indian History of the American West (Arena Books) by Dee Brown Buy new: £6.99 / Used from: £0.18 How the west was won... by genocide, near extinction and repatriation. A sorry period of US history.
	Blood Meridian: Or, the Evening Redness in the West (Picador Books) by Cormac McCarthy Buy new: £3.99 / Used from: £2.10 Hell on earth. The devil, war and an uncompromising story excellently told. A masterpiece of modern literature!
	Valdez is Coming by Elmore Leonard Buy used from: £0.01 When Mr Leonard still wrote westerns. A violent, cracking story.
	Once They Moved Like the Wind: Cochise, Geronimo and the Apache Wars by David Roberts Buy new: £10.49 / Used from: £2.05 Geronimo in particular comes across as a scary, fascinating but flawed and brutal man. An interesting insight into the protracted struggle that arose from a misunderstanding.
	The Wild Bunch [1970] Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £2.43 Countless repeat viewings of this film still doesn't deminish it's quality. A film entirely composed of anti-heroes heading for a violent end. Yet you still feel for them...
	Shane [1953] Buy new: £6.97 / Used from: £15.00 Beautifully shot and touching tale. Palance is one of THE classic western villains. Timeless.
	Unforgiven - 10th Anniversary Edition [1992] Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £3.00 Revisionist western, Eastwoods' finest hour. Wonderfully atmospheric with great characters.
	Ulzana's Raid [1972] Buy used from: £0.96 Gritty, downbeat but rewarding film. Pretty gripping stuff.
	Geronimo [1993] Buy used from: £7.44 A worthy film but was Geronimo really that mystical or wise? See no. 6, above. Directed by Walter Hill.
	Once Upon a Time in the West -- Special Collector's Edition (2 discs) [1969] Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £3.99 Fonda's Frank is one, great villian. Spaghetti not usually my taste but this one bucks that trend.
	The Long Riders [1980] Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £2.75 James/Younger gang, again Walter Hill. With a few Peckinpah-esque moments. Gritty though.
	Little Big Man [1970] Buy new: £3.88 / Used from: £3.59 Sprawling, charming, funny and moving. A favourite since my first viewing of it 15 years ago.
	Hombre [1966] Buy used from: £9.98 Paul Newman as a white man raised by Apaches. A great story from an Elmore Leonard book of the same name. Directed by Martin Ritt.
	Open Range [2004] Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £0.94 Nicely shot with good performances. Measured pace but it suits the tone of the film.
	Hud [1962] The (relatively) modern west. One of Newmans greatest performances... not a western as such, more a character study. Again, directed by Martin Ritt.
	Dances With Wolves [1991] Buy used from: £11.95 Has to be included. A solid, epic film. Not read the book yet though, which is far superior so I've heard.
