Nice PMP
I have owned 3 Archos PMP units now and bought this one due to its attractive price and really portable size with flash memory.
My impression of the sound quality is excellent. The sound is 'warmer' than an Ipod nano (which I own I am not an Ipod hater!).
The video performance whilst not as good as the Archos 605 is still very good and near DVD quality. I have now watched a couple of full length movies with no eyesight problems!
Although the flash memory is small at 2GB it is very cheaply upgradeable and I have currently a 4GB SD card installed.
I would agree with other reviewers buying the plug-ins is a pain but it is a well known issue on the internet, at least customers have the option. The docking unit is also really needed to utilise the PMP to the full and again is not cheap.
After purchase of the dock the the benefit of the unit becomes very clear and missed programmes from the TV can be recorded and watched anywhere!
Excellent as a recorder for the helmet camera
Bought this about 6 months ago to film some onboard footage of a track day, all I can say is that for the price I do not think you'll find a better package (together with the Archos helmet camera) all for about £160 delivered. I bought an 8Gb SD card to go with it, but each 25min video is about 300Mb (on default settings), so the 2Gb internal memory is more than adequate for a days track day filming. Mind you, given the price of SD cards these days it helps you use better settings.
As an MP3/MP4 player it is probably only average, especially when compared to an iPod, but for the price it's not bad.
Sound quality is very good, and the recorded pictures very stable. Overall, thoroughly recommended with the helmet camera, so much better that the ATC2000 all-in-one unit.
Disappointed
I bought this thinking that it would play most files, but it required a purchase of another two plug-ins which do not come cheap in order for it to play mp4s or files from VCDs. The supplied case is also not worth mentioning, as it is of such bad quality it will break even before you cal slide the player in. The player itself is built quite well and well designed, but the same cannot be said about the menu sytem. Archos is really trying to squeeze more money out of you with sneaky tricks. Id recommend either the iPod (which I also own and works beautifully straight out of the box) or one of the video players from Creative.
