DVD Description
This is the complete collection of the much-loved, long-running BBC1 sitcom One Foot In The Grave, featuring all the episodes and Christmas specials.
Who would have thought retirement could be so chaotic? Certainly not querulous Victor Meldrew, one of tree-lined suburbia's perennial complainers, or his long suffering wife Margaret. When he's forced to take early retirement, Victor suddenly has plenty of time on his hands to rage against the petty annoyances of life. But there's one thing to remember in the Meldrew household - whatever can go wrong often does and it usually spells disaster for Victor.
Synopsis
The world's most miserable man, Victor Meldrew (Richard Wilson) features in this collection of all six series from the hugely popular show.
Customer Reviews
Victor Meldrew is dead but this classic sitcom will live on
I loved this as a teenager when it was first shown on BBC1 and I still love it now, I don't know how popular this is with younger people of a certain age, but if I am in a young minority who likes this, then so be it because this makes me laugh which for me is the most important thing in a sitcom.
This does make me laugh but it is not the only reason why I have always loved this sitcom, there is something about it that I have always found darker but also more real, warmer and emotional (but not in an over the top sickly way) than a lot of sitcoms. I love sarcastic characters in sitcoms and Richard Wilson as Victor Meldrew is definitely up there with all the sarcastic sitcom greats, the situations that he unintentionally gets himself into are as funny now as on their original showing and will continue to be for as long as this is available for future generations to see.
Another reason why I have alway liked this sitcom is because of Victor's wife Margaret (Annette Crosbie) who I have always found to be more believable than a lot of wives in sitcoms, I just found her more likeable and less nagging than the usual stereotypical bossy and nagging old wife, even when they shout at each other, I always know that they will be fine. I also must give a special mention to Mrs Warboys (Doreen Mantle), her mannerisms just seem to always remind me of someone my nan nan use to know and I am sure that a lot of people will have known somebody similar.
Although I find this one of the funniest ever British sitcoms, it is more than that, it is an attack on the disgraceful stereotyping and patronising treatment of old people in general and the way that society seems to think that none of their opinions matter and Victor Meldrew is the perfect voice to say what people think, underneath all that shouting and whinging is a very caring old man that rightfully just wants to be treated with respect.
Compared to the absolute classic sitcoms of the 1970's this is modern but there is no question in my mind that this will be just as timeless. ONE OF MY FAVOURITE BRITISH SITCOMS EVER.
Comedy Doesn't Get Any Better!
This has got to be one of the best comedy series ever. I must have watched the whole series at least 10 times since I bought it. They just don't write them that well here in the U.S. Thanks to the wonderful cast and the brilliant writing of David Renwick. This is truly one of the must haves.
Amazing!
This box set is a must have, containing every single episode of this fantastically written and wonderfully casted/acted sitcom.
What's so good about this collection is it's 12 dvds, the entire series 1-6 including every Christmas/One off special as well as bonus Documentary 'The Story Of One Foot In the Grave' and the 'Britains Best Sitcom' featurette, all in all, this is hours and hours of absorbing, funny, heartwarming comedy which appeals to all ages.
I'd recently got hold of the Only Fools And Horses series 1-7 box set, and the downside of that was the missing christmas specials and one offs and feature lengths, as they contain integral parts of the continual storylines (eg Del meeting Raquel etc)
And with this box set, with every single moment available in chronological order, you don't miss a thing.
I'm sure if you're viewing this item and reading my hastily typed review, you already know how brilliant this sitcom was, the writing of David Renwick, the absolutely brilliant performances of Richard Wilson and Annette Crosbie, as well as the brilliant other characters such as Mrs Warboys, Mr Swainey, Patrick and Pippa and numerous guest stars such as Paul Merton, Barbara Windsor, Tim Brooke-Taylor and Eric Idle to name a few.
This is extremely good value for money and highly recommended, oh, and i've personally found no problems at all with audio/visual sync, so i wouldn't worry about that.
'I've been replaced by a box... It's standard procedure apparantley for a man of my age. The next stage is to stick you inside one."
Timeless and brilliant, and in my opinion quite underated
