Great fun
Out of all the birthday presents for my 6 year old daughter, this was one of the biggest hits! Its a mixture of malt vinegar and bicarbonate of soda which you put in the volcano and it shoots about 6 or 7 feet in the air so do take it outside! The only downside is that it is obviously short-lived but you can do it over and over if you have enough vinegar and bicarb in your kitchen cupboard
Superb fun for a 5+ child
My son (now 6) loves 'experiments' and is constantly asking for more of the sets from this range. This was our first. As the other reviewers have said, it gives a great volcano effect, and does indeed shoot froth several feet up, depending on how much bicarb and vinegar you add to the volcano.
It's an especially rewarding afternoon's experimenting if you take the trouble to create your landscape (soil and moss etc from the garden) as suggested in the instruction leaflet. And adding red food colouring to the mix makes for an even better lava-effect. Your child will want to keep repeating this experiment, so stock up on kitchen supplies as the ingredients provided with the kit soon run out (but resist their pleas to populate your landscape with real creatures!).
Misleading review
This volcano toy does exactly what it shows on the box - it makes a nice frothy fake lava which erupts gently out of the little hole, maybe half an inch high. Which is fine. But, having read the review on this site which describes the lava as erupting "6 or 7 feet in the air", we were SO disappointed! We already had a little toy volcano almost exactly like this one, and would never have got this one too if it hadn't been so over-hyped.
