Right I'm a student, and until 30th April go to the website above and pay £38.95 for this software officially from Microsoft, no I'm not talking about a dodgy version. Well anyway if you supply your .ac.uk email address, then you can buy it, if not, then you can't. Its a special promotion offer available to students and maybe staff (you'll have to check on that one) only until the date above, you can get a DVD backup sent to you for an extra £9. I choose to be buy it as downloading it illegally means I'm at risk getting sued and thats the last thing you want being a student.
The program itself is nicely updated, I've only used excel and word and to be honest but you get the rest thrown in too, which is nice. The Equation element in word takes a bit of getting used to as the interface is different from that of the older versions of word etc. I would say after a few days I'm getting used to it but after 10 years or so with the other interface, I don't know which I prefer. It seems to open and close easily, saving and everything else is okay.
To be honest, unless you've brought a new computer/laptop and don't have an older version with a few licenses spare :), then buying this is pointless. I wouldn't upgrade to ultimate or any 2007 office platform, as the older version do it well enough, and even spending an extra £40 isn't worth it as your not particularly getting anything rather than a new interface (in interface, I mean the look of it basically). However if you have brought a laptop with Vista, then it does work so well, just be careful as a student not to over spend, forty quid is a steal but over 500, don't bother.
Cost again !!
Yet again a very nice piece of software, but Microsoft are still living in the early 90's re. price.
Office and Vista Ultimate cost £765 together. Think about that for a moment and compare it with a 2gb/500gb/quad-core PC and a 24" monitor for the same price. We've reached the stage that just the OS and the Office suit cost as much as a top-end business PC. Simply unbelievable.
There's a lot of talk of Microsoft declining in its two core markets and the reasons are obvious. Vista and Office 2007 are not as well regarded as their predecessors yet together cost as much as two complete Dell business computers to run them on. Boggles the mind.
If Microsoft want to kill piracy just dump the WGA rubbish and use the saved money to reduce the price of these products.
Unbelievable
Lets be clear, this won't suit everybody. That said, it is a fantastic bit of software. I am a serious Office user (Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Word mainly) and would consider myself an advanced user for many years.
The new ribbon interface did take a little getting used to, but within a few hours it's easy to pick up and is actually fairly intuitive. Most of the old keyboard shortcuts still work, which helps, but I tend not to use them as everything can be found very quickly. I also find the ribbon doesn't take up that much space as I have always found that I end up with a few layers of toolbars in Office 2003 anyway.
The additional functionality in excel and powerpoint really stand out for me. In the former the considerably increased row and column chart are helpful, as is the way the formula are handled and can be found. The formatting of charts and other objects can result in VERY professional loooking documents, which is the main benefit in powerpoint. Some of the textual effects, such as perspective, reflections etc are fantastic. They can even be applied to objects such as pictures or smart shapes.
There is so much more control over what is displayed. The only thing I can think of that is missing is allowing embedded fonts in Excel. Other than that, this is a practically perfect productivity suite. It simply makes all others look incredibly basic.
