| New York editor Sol Stein dishes nuggets like: "if there is no action, there is no scene" or "Thrust your reader forward to the next chapter but don't take your reader where he wants to go!" or "The secret of good dialogue is to give each character different scripts" ... I could go on and on. The Sol Stein books occupy my bedside table and are well-thumbed and heavily underlined and markered. I refuse to lend them out - you'll just have to buy your own. Stephen King's book on writing is a wonderful account of a writing life and the search for twists that would make a good story. The best advice I got from Scary Steve? It is possible to work out on a treadmill while reading a book. I don't add to this list lightly. I hope these books on the craft of writing will prove as indispensable to you as they are to me. | ||
