Early flight of High Flying Airplane
This release from Primo is an excellent historical document of the early Airplane recorded Live in concert at the Time of the release of their second album "Surrealistic Pillow". Grace Slick has by now replaced the original female lead vocalist Signe Toly Anderson and most of the material is taken from the first two albums. If you want top quality sound then frankly you are better off buying "Live at The Monterey Festival 1967" or "Bless its pointed little head 1968" or "Sweeping up the spotlight" & "Live at the Family Dog" both 1969.
However, if you are interested in listening to the raw sound of the Band this a worthy purchase at a budget price. I particularly like the rough edge to this release since, in a strange way, it seems to epitomise the whole San Francisco scene at that time. i.e. spontaneous, experimental, fresh and new. The vocals are very much to the fore particularly Marty Balin`s. The set kicks off in grand style with Grace`s classic "White Rabbit", she almost screams the lyrics out at full blast. This is followed by two of Marty's songs "Plastic Fantastic Lover" & "It's no secret" before the shared vocals of "High Flying Bird". "Let`s get together" the Love Generation Anthem from "Jefferson Airplane Takes Off" follows before Jorma Kaukonen takes over for his bluesy "Come back Baby".
"Runnin' round this World" an outake from the first Album preceeds a really great version of "She has funny cars" which is one of the highlights here, before a fine blues workout on "You're bringing me down" with Jorma & Jack Casidy really kicking the Jams. The first C.D. closes with a fine long version of "Other side of this life" a definite highlight of the set. My criticism of the first disc would be its short length clocking in at approx. 33 mins and the fact that alot of the songs are faded at the end.
Disc 2 begins with "Tobacco Road" from the first Album before two great tracks from "Pillow", "My best friend" & "3/5 of a mile in 10 seconds". After this it gets quite experimental with something called "Thing" and another blues workout on "Don`t let me down". Finally closing with the majestic "Today" before "Don`t slip away" and "Somebody to love". The later being a long version at nearly six minutes with additional lyrics added by Marty at the end.
Overall well worth checking out if you are a fan of the band and are prepared to accept less than top notch quality sound. Personally I am delighted to have a full length recording of their very early shows despite the fade outs in places. It is in essence a very Bluesy orientated set and represents the most definitive collection of live songs officially released from the early material. I love it!
Cleared For Take Off
I agree with everything said in the previous review but would like to add that this is a re-release of the winterland recordings Cleared for Take Off album although the order of the songs has been changed and this release spreads over two CDs instead of Cleared's one, despite the running time being the same.Whichever album you purchase this is a fine collection of early live airplane in full flight
