My favourite albums of all time
ParklifeParklife by Blur
Buy new: £3.98 / Used from: £0.46
Forget Oasis, THIS album defined "Britpop" - such an apparent mixed jumble of songs, but it just all seems to hang together perfectly - the best song has to be the hauntingly beautiful "This is a low"
Scoundrel DaysScoundrel Days by a-ha
Buy new: £3.98 / Used from: £2.60
OK, I'm not ashamed - forget "Hunting High and Low" and the childish pop of "Take on me" - this (their second album) was their finest moment. Best song? Manhattan Skyline (maybe!)
A Rush of Blood to the HeadA Rush of Blood to the Head by Coldplay
Buy new: £5.48 / Used from: £0.58
Outstandingly beautiful - Chris Martin wears his heart on his sleeve, the pianos are esquisite, guitars top notch - a sublime masterpiece. Best songs, "The Scientist", "Amsterdam" and "In my place".
The Lexicon Of LoveThe Lexicon Of Love by ABC
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £2.44
For me the defining pop album of the eighties - not one single weak song, and the outstanding track for me is NOT "The Look of love" but the heart-wrenching classic "All of my heart".
Minor Earth Major SkyMinor Earth Major Sky by a-ha
Buy new: £3.98 / Used from: £2.39
Fifteen years on from their famous first single, it seems incredible that these ex-teen idols can make such a brilliant, critically acclaimed, mature rock album. Only narrowly inferior to "Scoundrel".
Pet Sounds [2000 Re-issue]Pet Sounds [2000 Re-issue] by The Beach Boys
Buy new: £6.68 / Used from: £0.99
An epic masterpiece, I still think this is better than it's alleged rival, "Sergeant Pepper". I challenge anyone to say they don't think "God only knows" and "Sloop John B" are beautiful, brilliant
The DoorsThe Doors by The Doors
Buy used from: £0.87
With the POSSIBLE exception of "L A Woman", this work (their first) is surely their finest. Not a duff track, and "Light my fire" is, of course, a massive highlight. A dark, haunting epic.
SinglesSingles by The Smiths
Buy used from: £1.72
If you love the sound of jangling, indie-style guitars then you will love this classic Smiths compilation. Too difficult to pick a best track, but I LOVE "Bigmouth..", "William.." and "Sheila take.."
East Of The Sun, West Of The MoonEast Of The Sun, West Of The Moon by a-ha
Buy new: £4.18 / Used from: £2.64
The album that finally signalled A-ha had turned their backs on pure pop and "teenybop music" - lots of guitar, sax, moody basslines and Doors-like rock tunes. Includes cover of "Crying in the Rain"
The Who Sings My GenerationThe Who Sings My Generation by The Who
Buy new: £6.98 / Used from: £3.01
I love The Who, yet suprisingly this (their debut album) sounds quite Beatles-esque in places. The legendary track "My Generation" was the original Sex Pistols-style shocker of it's era. Superb.
Led Zeppelin IVLed Zeppelin IV by Led Zeppelin
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £3.00
My favourite Zeppelin album, and not just because of "that song" (Stairway to heaven) - although it clearly has a bearing on my choice. Jimmy Page was (and is) an absolute genius of guitar playing.
Hopes and FearsHopes and Fears by Keane
Buy new: £3.98 / Used from: £0.01
Wow, not bad for a debut album - forget all the "no guitars" talk, this trio certainly know how to do "epic". Best song for me is "Somewhere only we know", though there's bearly a duffer on the album.
