Pop wannabe Finley Quaye emerged from nowhere in 1997 with this debut and claimed to be Tricky's Uncle, much to the latter's disgruntlement. After the commercial and critical success of Maverick A Strike, however, it was a moot point as to whether Tricky would be best known as Finley Quaye's nephew. Maverick A Strike's success was probably down to its providing a rare antidote to the morbid, noir- ish obsessions of contemporaries like Massive Attack; Quaye's vocals are as up, sunny and fresh as the first breath of Spring. Even the downbeat notes struck in the lyrics of "Even After All" and "Ride On And Turn The People On" can't cloud the shining reggae rush of this album, given innumerable citrus twists and techno turns by producers Jonathan Quarmby and Kevin Bacon, held together by a band who demonstrated live their ability to match tightness with a lightness of touch on the likes of "It's Great When We're Together" and "Sweet And Loving Man". --David Stubbs

Reggae music combined with soul, rock and pop makes Finley Quaye's debut album, MAVERICK A STRIKE, a pleasant mix of genres. Soft, subtle songs ("It's Great When We're Together",)reggae standards ("Ultra Stimulation") and industrial textures ("Supreme I Preme", "I Need A Lover") come together to create a interesting blend of music, easy to swallow. The Fender Rhodes vibrato on "Even After All" sounds dreamy and distant, giving off a relaxing, comforting feeling. Make sure you check out the title cut, which was co-produced by Kevin Bacon. With most of the cuts at least co-written by Quaye, his songwriting talents are apparent on this thirteen-song release. The Bob Marley-influenced textures make MAVERICK A STRIKE more than worthy of repeated spins.

Happy music
Its not often that music is made like this - happy and summery. This is a great album to listen to on grey rainy days as the songs will take you away to sunshine and lazy days on the beach.

Fantwastic Finley
Finley Quaye what a guy, and what a debut album. I originally bought to hear his version of Bob Marley's song 'sun is shining' which he named 'sunday shining', but after listening to some of his other songs such as 'supreme I preme' and 'Even after All' I was hooked and thought that it was definately worth every penny It is a good album for just chilling out to and great for stress relief. All i can say to anyone who is dubious about it, is BUY IT RIGHT NOW and part with ya money

Superb, fresh and original
Taking influences from reggae, hip-hop, soul, funk and pop, Finley Quaye welds it all together with originality and talent. Brilliant.
