Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
On their debut album Inside In/Inside Out, Brighton band The Kooks demonstrate a real potential for greatness. That's because this young band have two crucial things going for them: a wealth of ideas and an awareness of their place in their musical lineage. Which is why it's probably so appropriate that Inside In/Inside Out was recorded at The Kinks' Ray Davies' own studio--Kooks frontman Luke Pritchard, like Davies, seems to have a knack for churning out catchy guitar-pop nuggets. So, after the brief and mellow intro of "Seaside", the album really kicks in to grab the listener by the ears, with each song better than the previous. Sofa Song" is a strumming, singalong bounce, but "Eddie's Gun" is a rough-around-the-edges jangly rocker, and "Ooh La" is a mellow and melodic stroll, all building up to the downright funky tracks like "Matchbox" and "Naive". nd so it continues, through 14 songs, propelled by Pritchard's hiccupping vocal delivery and Hugh Harris's rather excellent guitar playing. The Kooks had a lot of hype prior to the release of Inside In/Inside Out; rather impressively, they've more than managed to live up to it. --Ted Kord

CD Description
'Inside In/Inside Out' is the debut album by Brighton-basedscuzz-pop merchants The Kooks. Combining the raucous energyof early-Kinks with the up-for-it pop know-how of Supergrass might sound like a tall order, but Luke Pritchard and Co. have pulled it off with aplomb, making for an exciting and accessible debut effort. Includes the singles 'Sofa Song' and'You Don't Love Me'.

A MUST FOR ANY KOOKS FAN5
This CD includes songs taken from two live acoustic shows (one at Abbey Road and one in Osaka, Japan).
I am a massive Kooks fan and it was great to listen to the songs from their album "Inside In Inside Out" acoustically, recorded live.
The above amazon track listing is not correct, but the CD does feature most of the songs listed, plus a brilliant version of "California".
There is even a bit of commentary between songs from Luke Pritchard, as he talks to the audience.

The Kooks Are Out.4
I first heard The Kooks supporting Weezer in Brixton, August 05 I believe. They were unknown to mostly the whole audience, but this didn't seem to faze them as they staggered round the stage brimming with life, Luke in perfect rock star pose like he was famous already. On first glance, you knew they were cool and you knew they were good.
I was delighted to find 'Inside..' in the charts less than a year later, and have been following them since I heard of their rise to stardom.
The album doesn't disappoint. The magical thing about it is the way it seems to break away from the radio friendly Pop culture that Indie Rock has somehow blended into with the help of bands like Babyshambles and We Are Scientists and breathes individuality and originality into modern day music, temporarily shadowing the bland sound of commercialism.
Standout tracks include tracks 1, 4, 6-9 and 11
'Seaside' is a short introduction, a mellow acoustic number that's echoed towards the end of the album. 'Eddie's Gun' is a major contender for this year's summer anthem with its infectious melody and Luke's wonderful voice creating a surge of shivers and smiles. 'She Moves..' is a personal favourite, a light, uplifting track with fantastic lyrics and a pretty chord pattern. 'Nieve', the new single, is a brilliant track if not a little over-killed on the radio. Nevertheless, a catchy sing-a-long chorus and a nice rhythm to nod your indie head to, similar to the previous track 'Matchbox'. 'If Only' is a full-out dirty rock n roll tune, a hot-headed track crammed to bursting point with attitude, dance and raw vocals.
Although this album truly is a masterpiece of the modern day, the last few tracks start to lack the pace, immediacy and spontaneity of the tracks listed above. Don't be fooled, the tracks not mentioned before 'If Only' are good, but not standout.
A superb act that I hope will go from strength to strength. Believe the hype.

Best thing I've heard in a long time5
I'm not going to come on here and write a load of stuff thinking I'm some great music critic. Straight up, this is one of the best albums I've heard in my 23 years on this planet. It's not a grower, it's bang on the money from the first time you hear it. I'm going to see them in October and I can't wait. Naive is not the best song on the album, far from it. Buy it, I promise it will be the smartest money you'll ever spend. The first song is soooooo good. One last comment, 5 stars are not enough.
