Customer Reviews

Hot Damn! indeed. . . . .5
I pre-ordered this album a while ago after buying the two 12" singles culled from it - Traveller and Got to Lose Your Way. If you're a fan of the burgeoning nu-funk scene at the moment, you may well be familiar with Leeds' The New Mastersounds. The Haggis Horns are a similar sounding outfit - not surprising since part of the line up has branched off for this project.
The differences between the two groups are subtle, yet become noticeable after repeated listens. The Haggis Horns (not surprisingly) focus in more detail on the brass and reed sections of their sound. And with what results! There also seems to be a slightly more modern production sheen on this record, compared to other Mastersounds releases, which retain a certain 70s gritty baseness. This is not a criticism, merely a comment on the sound you should expect.
The tracks themselves all offer something out of the ordinary, while all being linked loosely by the sheer funkiness of the outfit. For instance, The Traveller Parts 1 and 2 offer entirely different rythmic variations on a theme; one a groovy samba and the other verging on house 4/4 beats. Add some reggae and traditional booty shaking JB stlye tracks and you have a dynamite new album.
I would expect the Haggis Horns to be a knockout live act, and as such can't wait to see them supporting Mark Ronson soon in Manchester. I hope this review was useful to you.
