Customer Reviews

Not up the standard of their last 3 CDs3
This is a good and an entertaining listen but some of the tracks fall below their usual high standard. The good is good as opposed to being great and the best tracks are Proud of the House We Built and God Must be Busy. The Ballad of jerry Jeff Walker is amusing. No truly great tracks. Not as essential a buy as Hillbilly Deluxe, Red Dirt Road or Steers and Stripes which are better albums and much more essential buys. Worth buying if you like Brooks & Dunn.

The Stones? ZZ Top? No! It's Brooks & Dunn!!!5
After the brilliance of "Steers & Stripes" and "Red Dirt Road", I found Brooks & Dunn's last outing, "Hillbilly Deluxe" somewhat disappointing, with something of a lack of cohesion - it couldn't decide if it was a laid back album or a party on album. No problem with that here - this is foot-to-the-floor, with even the slower, more thoughtful songs barely giving you room to breathe.

But with their rockier side well and truly on display, there arises the question, are they really country? Brooks & Dunn happily display their influences, with song titles like "Johnny Cash Junkie (Buck Owens Freak)" (a future single, surely?), and "The Ballad of Jerry Jeff Walker", though it's interesting to note that when I spoke to another B&D fan recently she had not heard of either of the latter two names! But also give very big nods along the way to other bands they have been involved with - "Put A Girl In It" could be the Rolling Stones (with whom B&D toured a few years ago) and "Drop in The Bucket" could be ZZ Top (who they famously swapped songs with for a TV special).

Lots of great funky tracks ("Johnny Cash Junkie", "Put A Girl In It", "Tequila", and "Drop In The Bucket") with only the last two, "American Dreamer" and "God Must Be Busy", and the almost certain single, "Cowgirls Don't Cry" bringing out their more thoughtful side.

So, very different to "Hillbilly Deluxe", but a collection sure to please both the ardent fans and the casual listener.

Worth shopping around, cos there seem to be several special editions offering two and/or three bonus tracks!
