Product Description

The legendary crooner Johnny Mathis returns with 'A Night To Remember', another collection of soulful and romantic tunes. Among the songs performed are collaborations with saxophonist Kenny G (who plays, appropriately, on 'Just The Two Of Us') and Gladys Knight ('A Night To Remember'). Mathis' voice is still centre-stage and strong throughout, but with the necessary tenderness to deliver the ballads. Produced by Walter Afanasief (who's clients have included Celine Dion, Mariah Carey and Leona Lewis), this record will delight fans of the crooner's lengthy back catalogue.

Customer Reviews

Exactly what you'd expect4
No surprises on this album, but that's not always a bad thing. I picked this product because I wanted to listen to an album of recognisable songs, with a good singer and soothing melodies. And that's what you get. No silly cover versions of songs with Mathis trying to be hip, just sensible colloborations and really well, nice, songs.

Soothing and simple4
This is wonderful background music with nostalgia added in to boot. I enjoyed being reminded of the quality and smoothness of Johnny Mathis' voice.

But one I wish to forget.2
I didn't expect to be find this enjoyable, but my mother bought one of his compilations not so long ago and I knew she was a fan, so I thought I'd pass it on to her and get her views. Turns out she didn't think too highly of it either...

If you're a Mathis superfan, take solace from the facts that (a) age has not diminished his voice and (b) Sony has not forced him into a disastrous makeover to appeal to a younger market. Nope, A Night To Remember finds him reaching out to the converted with a batch of songs already familiar from countless other covers by artists in their collections. But even for those it has to be considered inessential. It's debatable as to whether the world needed another version of Walk on By, but it can certainly live without one like this. A better, less conservative selection of songs is needed next time.

Just to make it clear, the two stars form an average of my mum's three and my own verdict. At least he stays true enough to himself not to include (Is This The Way To) Amarillo. You have to applaud any aging crooner who can resist sticking that on his latest release.
