Billy Connolly - never castrated.
The things we love about comedians are their astute observations and mastery of the language. The distractive thing about them is their whiny voices and manic mannerisms.
Billy Connolly is possibly the only stand up who does not behave like a big nerd. He delivers his routine like one of the boys and gets away with the taboo.
I saw him perform in Sydney a few years back and had stomach cramps from laughing out aloud. Laughing out aloud - especially in a public place - is rare for me. I did it when I saw “Life of Brian, Black Adder, The Young ones, Little Britain, the Office and when I saw the comedians Simon Roptell and Morgan Dehar (Garter & Quail) perform last year in Newtown.(Very funny and Amazonians - please keep me posted when stuff gets released from these guys!!!!!)
Anyway, Connolly’s stand up is brilliant here, but the tour bits wane a little. The people he meets and places he goes matter little - We are hanging out for the comedy. Australia is a great place and Connolly the tour guide is likeable – but Connolly the stand up is genius. I urge comedy buffs to look out for “Billy Connolly live 1994” - Best video performance ever.
Otherwise if you like your stand up mixed in with a travelogue – this is the dvd.
Ripper!
He says at the end of the series that he doesn't do geography programmes. True, but in terms of being a travel programme you can't help but to be taken in by his passion for street entertainers, art work, pie floaters, climbing the giant coat hanger, Ned Kelly, Harold Holt, dampers, aboriginal food and being in the middle of flat Outback in dry, sun scorched conditions. I lived the series with him and felt the onset of post holiday blues when it ended. Inspirational. Oh, and I really enjoyed the snippets of his string playing and stage performances too!
Well worth a watch
I first watched this world tour when it was shown on the BBC and loved it, I eventually got the video box set when it came on the market and recently the DVD. Earlier this year I had the opportunity to visit Australia (Melbourne)and thanks to Billy I visited Williams Ricketts Sanctuary, to be honest the DVD doesn't do the place justice, but it was a fantastic place.
If your going to Australia I certainly recomend this DVD as it does show some of the hidden wonders of the place that few locals know about.
Better than any tourist info centre because you also have the humour thrown in
