CD Description
The Welsh powerhouse of classical crossover, Bryn Terfel, returns with a collection of songs inspired by the British Isles. Though he is more accustomed to straight operatic roles, Terfel here shows a gentler, more commercial side, performing duets with stars such as Ronan Keating (who bravely takes the lead on 'Danny Boy') and Kate Royal (on the Garfunkel-indebted 'Scarborough Fair'). Elsewhere, standards such as Ewan MacColl's 'The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face' sits alongside traditional offerings such as 'Marwnad Yr Ehedydd' ('The Lark's Elegy'). Terfel and friends are accompanied throughout by the London Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Barry Wordsworth.

First Rate
I have to admit that I had concerns about buying this disc. But it has surpassed my expectations. It is not as sentimental as so many of these interpretations are, and Bryn Terfel's singing is excellent. The duets provide appropriate and beautiful diversifications. I think 'Danny Boy' may have worked better as a solo, but it is still a great duet which works well. I say this as someone who also loves 'Led Zeppelin' 'The Who' 'Beethoven' and 'Wagner'. Whether that adds anything to my opinion I know not; but this disc is worth buying if you enjoy listening to a darn good song, sung by a master, and supported by a great cast.
Voice as brilliant as ever
Very enjoyable except for "Danny Boy" which, with Keating, I thought was dire.
The female duetists were an asset.
Not what I expected
I have quite a few CDs of Bryn and I enjoy listening to all of them and have even learned to sing along to some of the tracks in Welsh. With this CD however from my perspective although several of the tracks are what I would consider to be popular tracks, that most people no matter where they reside in the British Isles would know,the rest are quite anonymous and dare I say at times boring. I am also sure that tracks could have been recorded that more accurately reflect areas and regions of the British Isles. Perhaps I am being a bit biased but how nice it would have been to hear Bryn sing the Blaydon Races, Water of Tyne or Cushie Butterfield, maybe I should buy an Owen Brannigan CD.
