Pop Diva emerges as a global Icon
You're Madonna, it's 1992 and you've just landed one of the biggest record deals in history...Whaddya gonna do?
It's impossible to write about Erotica - the single - without looking at the events surrounding the occasion. Madonna had just launched Maverick Records and wanted to start with a bang. This took the form of Madonna the book (Sex - the biggest ever first run for a book of its' kind), Madonna the album (Erotica), Madonna the movie (Body of Evidence directed by Ulrich Edel) and even Madonna the couture model (for Jean Paul Gaultier).
In October 1992, after seven months of speculation and rumour, the single got its' worldwide release to peak the charts at #3 in both the USA and UK. Written and produced with Shep Pettibone and containing a sample of Cool and the Gang's 'Jungle Boogie' its' often denigrated by critics as Justify My Love Pt2. However this does it no justice.
Erotica has a much harder feel with M in a dominant mood in the role of 'Dita, your mistress [for] tonight'. Shep's production is slick with a heavy bass and a background noise (similar to a well played record) that gives the track a worn, used feel. (Real underground, hardcore stuff). If you get a chance, check out the remixes on both the Erotic CD that came free with the Sex book and the one's by William Orbit on the 'Bad Girl' single, all are absolutely great!
In the end the general public tired of it all and sales of the following two albums suffered along with some critical acclaim. However, with hindsight, ask anyone who was there at the time and they'll tell you that it was the turning point that changed Madonna's status from that of 80's pop diva to respected icon status.
More Erotica from Madonna.
The whole Erotica era is my favourite phase of Madonna's career and Erotica is my favourite single and album from that time. The lyrics and music from this single do "push the envelope", but this is all part of what Madonna was exploring at the time. Erotica was a brilliant single, but this remix cd single of Erotica adds another dimension to the song. This Cd is a must for those who agree that this was one of the best era's of Madonna's career.
i'd like to get you in a spin
In my opinion most of the music in Madonna's long career has been extremely unremarkable. Poor productions of poor songs. Until suddenly this weird high point with two fabulous songs: 'erotica' and 'justify my love', and their hot, glamorous, cheeky accompanying videos and maxi-singles.
The songs are dark, sleek, sensual, electric, human; they have desire, confidence, heat, need, funk. Here are all versions of erotica, and all of similar lengths. There is no stand-out mix:the interest is in the variety. The whole maxi-single stands just under 40 mins, and is far better value than the LP of the same name, where 'erotica' was far and away the stand-out track.
Let your imagination run riot, and these grooves will get you in a spin. Soon after it was back to poorer stuff for Madonna--until the recent peak again of 'Confessions': but that's another story....
