Madonna steps back in time...but with a foot firmly set in the future!
What a brilliant, brilliant track, the sound of this summer if we have one!! With one foot based firmly in the future of R&B and the other planted somewhere between early 80's Ska music and Madonna's own early 80's past, Give It 2 Me is probarbly the standout track from her latest multi platinum album Hard Candy. Pharrell Williams has done an excellent job in re-inventing the next phase of R&B/house music..... Its pop at its best but with a twist, the song is reminiscent of her early 80's tracks from one of her biggest selling albums, her debut opus that was, Madonna. Stealing ever so slightly from that popular early 80's British genre Ska, Give It 2 Me is about Madonna letting go, losing it on the dancefloor and having a good old time in the disco just like she did in 1985 with hits like Into The Groove. Its genius lies in its simplicity, it has an ability to get inside your head, irritating?? maybe! but infectious and good all the same, a great track which rightfully deserves to be her 14th UK number 1 single.

When i first listened to Madonna's Hard Candy, 'Give It 2 Me' felt like an immediate highlight. What i think works so well about it is that it sounds as if its come straight out of Madonna's 80s years, bringing to mind something like Gambler - that feisty attitude of Madonna's youth just as prevalent in this track. And of course, those hints of nostalgia in Give It 2 Me are then brought bang up to date in what results as a storming floorfiller of a track. As always, Madonna has proven she is the master of combining old and new.

The track just builds and builds, layering synths on top of eahc other and touches of vocodered vocals - the whole thing immaculately produced and like all great Madonna tracks, instantly catchy and impossible not to get up and dance too.

So, with those razor sharp synths whipping across a relentless beat courtesy of Pharrell, the lyrics of 'Don't stop me now, don't need to catch my breath, I can go on and on and on' are Madonna's streak of defiance as she tells us she can do whatever she pleases. All in all, it's an ace track and well worth getting.

Praise must also go to Paul Oakenfold who serves up an ace remix of the track as the single's b-side. Kicking off with a stomping bassline, this version could have come straight off of Madonna's Confessions album, all futuristic and spacey in its epicness. Madonna has always really impressed me on the remix front and this version is no exception.
