About the Author
is an Assistant Professor of Sound Recording Technology at the University of Massachusetts. An active member of the Audio Engineering Society, and a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America, Case is an engineer, educator, and author who speaks frequently on audio and acoustics across the United States and internationally. With degrees in Mechanical Engineering, Music, and Acoustics, Professor Case lives and works at the intersection of art and science.

Highly recommended for audio engineers and educators alike!
Alex Case's book takes you through the technical aspects of the most important effects and dynamics processes, as well as describing the creative applications of such tools within the context of a multitrack mix. Each chapter is concluded with helpful discography selections, and technical detail, although comprehensive, can be understood by the relatively uninitiated. This is supported by useful diagrams throughout the text and the layout is straightforward and sensible.

Of particular note is his offering on compression. It is described in the text as the 'most misunderstood' of effects processes, and the ensuing chapter helps to demistify various misconceptions, particularly in regard to how attack and release controls affect the sound. In addition, the material on snare drum recording and production really serves to highlight the importance of this 'burst' of sound within a commercial mix.

I teach and examine A Level Music Technology, and whilst some of the science is a little too advanced for this level of study, the description of creative applications contained within the book will prove extremely useful when teaching production. The introductory chapters on signal flow, recording sessions, audio fundamentals and perception are equally useful for preparing students.

Educators in HE and audio engineers will no doubt find some real magic in there too!

The author has an interesting and varied background. Aside from working in the industry as a recording engineer, Case has degrees in Music, Acoustics and Mechanical Engineering. This makes for an insightful and informative read.
