More than a retread of the user manual.
This manual for Reason isn't particularly badly written and once you've read it (and played about in Reason, of course) you should have a good idea of what everything does and how things work. Many technical books don't do much more than give examples and big screenshots of techniques and processes already described in the manual.

This book starts at the basics and then takes you further than that. It is sensibly laid out with a quick overview followed by in depth chapters on each synth/processor in Reason (which makes it easy to find a particular section). Even someone who has been using Reason for a while is likely to find some new ideas and inspiration here.

The included CD-ROM includes some ReFills full of patches and REX loops for use in your own songs, and a handy template for storing your own projects in an easy-to-find way. The patches mentioned in the book are not duplicated on the CD - you really do have to wire them up yourself; which I think is more useful because you are likely to learn more from plugging things up than flicking through a list of presets.

In short, if you use Reason software then it is well worth also having this book around.

a valuable guide
this book is not for you if you are new to reason. the techniques described are fairly advanced, although they are well described, and illustrated too. the accompanying CD ROM lets you preview the patches outlined in the book, so you will have a good idea where to go from there. also there is a smattering of sound theory thrown in for good measure, not too much, but just enough so you can impress your mates when you're out gigging, ( or in the studio). handy info if you are migrating from hardware based rack systems to reason.

In short, get comfortable with the reason basics first, then get this book.

Hopefully this book will be updated to reflect the changes to reason that will appear in version 4( I can t wait to get my mits on the thor synth)
