Frets On Fire
Sanchez and Quintero both know their way
around a fretboard. Magnificently so.
Their rock roots occasionally show through
but the style never loses its pristine shape.
By turns passionate, lyrical, fiery and wildly rhythmical
they look both forward and backward simultaneously in their
assimilation of a rich Mexican/Spanish musical heritage.
The sound palette is extremely varied throughout the project.
The deconstructed traditionalism of 'Logos' displays a strong
abilty to manipulate atmosphere. The contrast between the
electric and acoustic guitar parts is highly effective.
'Santo Domingo' is a playful staccato romp which artfully
combines strummed and percussive elements with elemental skill.
S & Q are joined by Jorge Strunz and Ardeshir Farah (another fine
duo) on 'Master Maqui' with thrilling results. The track contains
some long improvisatory runs which are truly breathtaking.
Rock guitarist Alexander Skolnick's contribution to 'Atman' may well
have helped to raise a few blisters for all three performers.
It is a furiously paced and dramatic piece - A real roller-coaster.
The central electric guitar solo creates a fine sonic frenzy.
Final track 11:11 is a stunner. From its soft shuffling opening
bars the composition moves with considerable rhythmic and melodic
complexity towards an elusive and enigmatic piano-based conclusion.
The CD delivers a very rich and rewarding musical experience.
The accompanying DVD amply illustrates their capacity to deliver
the goods in a live performance as well.
Highly Recommended.
More of the same
Having thoroughly enjoyed the previous CD, and seeing them perform live, I suppose we were just a little disappointed to find that this CD is so similar in musical style. Probably our fault, not R&G. Still the fantastic playing and energy, but lacking that little something. Excellent value with DVD as well.
Eleven Out Of Ten!
Is this rock infused flamenco or flamenco infused rock? Who cares - this truly is tip-top music, played with the skill and verve of two people who understand just how capable the humble acoustic guitar can be.
Having collected the albums of Rodrigo Y Gabriela since they first burst onto the music scene, this album is by far and away the most controlled and accomplished, relying on the unbelievable rythmns set up by Gabriela to create the backdrop for Rodrigo to play the melodies over - some at truly breathtaking speeds and others in a more relaxed, almost bluesy setting.
With already over two weeks stuck in my CD player, I am still finding rythmn counterpoints that make your hair stand on end and, while it would be very easy to think that many things can be done to enhance the technical abilities of the players in the studios, just flip over to the DVD and watch these two produce live exactly what they do in the studio - magical, nothing less!
Personal favourites? Yep, every one of the 11 magnificent tracks, which can either be listened to in isolation or as a whole album - truly, what great music is all about....fully deserving the 5 star tag.
BUY!
