Product Description

There is immense variety in both the scenery and natural life of the Pembrokeshire coast and its exploration can be equally satisfying for serious walkers and those more inclined to potter. At any time of the year there is much to see as the continuing cycle of nature successively reveals its different moods and aspects. This guide is designed to assist in the planning of a long-distance walk as well as to provide a companion to point out some of the interesting features along the way. The contorted nature of the coast creates many sections that can conveniently be walked on a day basis, and a separate chapter suggests some possibilities. An accommodation guide, distance charts and access and transport points provide additional information, together with an informative introduction, which includes the region's geology, history, flora and fauna, topography and weather conditions. The long-distance walk is divided into 15 clear sections of between 7 and 19 miles. "The Pembrokeshire Coastal Path" provides an almost unique association of natural beauty, habitat, variety and mood, which is readily accessible to lovers of the countryside throughout the year. The county's complex geology and the effects of erosion have combined to create a coastal strip of outstanding scenic attraction. The coastline's favourable association with the relatively warm waters of the Gulf Stream has created a multiplicity of rich and varied habitats promoting an immense range of plant and animal life. Short lengths of the way pass through towns and villages, but the majority is along open coast, where you may hardly meet another person all day.

Editorial Reviews

About the Author
Both natives of Lancashire and living not far from Preston, Dennis and Jan Kelsall are no strangers to the Ribble Way and the splendid countryside through which it runs. As professional outdoor writers and photographers, they have written and illustrated many guides covering some of the country's most popular walking areas. They also contribute to various magazines, as well as producing a weekly walking feature for the Lancashire Evening Post. Their enjoyment of the countryside extends far beyond a love of fresh air and open spaces and an appreciation of scenery. They also have a keen interest in the environment and its geology, flora and wildlife, as well as a passion for the local history that so often provides clues to interpreting the landscape.

Essential5
I purchased this before I began the walk as a companion to my OS map. Without this book my walk would have been only brilliant, with it my week walking the path has become one of my favourite weeks of my life. This is simply awesome the amount of detail is just right, it includes enough on the geology, nature and history of which Pembrokeshire is rich. Many a burial stone or Iron Age Fort would have been missed without it.

Dennis Kelsall is obviously very familiar with the path and his passion for it shines through. I have subsequently returned twice since I completed the path, each time finding something new. I still think it is important to purchase the OS map(s) as a companion to the book as you will find them more thorough than the OS maps printed in the book. Buy this book, book some youth hostels and spend the best time of your life walking this most beautiful part of the UK. I guarantee you won't regret it.
