My favourite WW2 novels
I'll Bring You ButtercupsI'll Bring You Buttercups by Elizabeth Elgin
Buy used from: £0.01
There are four excellent books in this series which tracks a family from before WW1 to the end of WW2 - this is the first.
All the Sweet PromisesAll the Sweet Promises by Elizabeth Elgin
Buy used from: £0.01
Another by Elizabeth Elgin. I highly recommend all her WW2 novels.
Goodbye Sweetheart (Street at War)Goodbye Sweetheart (Street at War) by Lilian Harry
Buy new: £5.49 / Used from: £0.01
Again, the first is a series of four, following the inhabitants of a street through WW2.
Corner House GirlsCorner House Girls by Lilian Harry
Buy used from: £0.01
First in a series of three. Not as good as Ms Harry's other series in my opinion but still more than worth a look.
The PathfinderThe Pathfinder by Margaret Mayhew
Buy used from: £0.01
An interesting perspective on Germany in the aftermath of the War.
BluebirdsBluebirds by Margaret Mayhew
Buy used from: £0.01
Ms Mayhew has written a number of books in this time period, all of which are worth a read although they are not as good as some in this list.
Lights Out LiverpoolLights Out Liverpool by Maureen Lee
Buy new: £5.49 / Used from: £0.01
The first in a series which again follows the families of one street through the War.
That SummerThat Summer by Andrew Greig
Buy new: £5.49 / Used from: £0.01
The Battle of Britain from the perspective of a RAF pilot and the radar operator he loves.
Charlotte GrayCharlotte Gray by Sebastian Faulks
Buy new: £5.59 / Used from: £0.01
Harrowing at times, this made a six hour train journey fly by. The book is miles better than the film, which messed with the ending unforgivably.
EnigmaEnigma by Robert Harris
Buy used from: £0.01
Another example of the source novel being better than the film, and an interesting insight into codebreaking in WW2 (especially when compared to Elizabeth Elgin's treatment of the Enigma machine).
Chocolate GirlsChocolate Girls by Annie Murray
Buy new: £3.83 / Used from: £0.01
A book sponsored by Cadburys. How commercial but a combination of my two favourite things so I won't complain. It's a good solid read if not an instant classic.
Lavender Road (London at war)Lavender Road (London at war) by Helen Carey
Buy used from: £0.01
The first of three books following a London street at War - I read all three in a weekend and enjoyed them all very much.
