Product Description

Now for the first time nurses have a comprehensive and reliable guide to the care of patients in the mental health setting. The Oxford Handbook of Mental Health Nursing gives concise, practical and expert advice on all aspects of this specialised and challenging field. Giving a complete picture of the role of the mental health nurse, the handbook gives a systematic summary of the prevalence, features and nursing management of the major mental disorders. Helping you achieve the best possible results for your patients, the authors offer a wealth of recommendations, guidance and information from their years of experience. Whatever situation you are in, the Oxford Handbook of Mental Health Nursing will give you the information you need. The handbook covers the vast majority of scenarios you will ever encounter. Major sections cover assessment; care planning; developing, maintaining and ending therapeutic relationships; working in partnership with service users and their carers; and the Mental Health Act. Further topics include recognising, prevention and management of violence; risk assessment; culture and diversity; the essence of care; patient-centred mental health nursing; psychosocial interventions; and medications management. So you can find the information you need without delay, the book is clearly laid out with one topic per page, and written in an easily readable note-based style. Blank pages for writing notes, observations and local protocols allow your handbook to be customised to meet your specific needs. All this is available at your fingertips, in a pocket-sized handbook with hard-wearing plastic covers. Written by practising nurses and subject experts, the Oxford Handbook of Mental Health Nursing is a unique and invaluable companion to practising and student nurses, and to all who need to understand the special issues associated with mental health nursing.

"...this clear, well-thought out and...comprehensive companion for mental health nurses is a helpful structure on which to build competent, sensitive and effective practice."

Review
Not only does it provide a guide for a range of interventions used in mental health nursing but it also furnishes the reader with a clear and concise guide to a variety of agencies, both statuatory and voluntary, relating to mental health care and management, which all mental health nurses should be aware of...[it is] written by mental health nurses for mental health nurses, as opposed to theorists or academics who can sometimes lose touch with the reality of caring for individual with mental health problems... I was left with an overwhelming feeling of regret on reading this book that I am not about to start my career all over again. It is not a book to borrow, it is one you must own. (From the Foreword by Professor Peter Nolan, Staffordshire University, UK )

Mental Health Nursing for beginners2
Okay, I got this book through the RCN as a free gift and am really glad I didn't pay for it. It has some some quite useful information in it for job interviews but does not give you enough for essays or revising for exams as a student as it feels like reading a powerpoint presentation handout!

As a qualified nurse, I would have to say that this book is completely redundent. I would consider The Oxford Handbook of Psychiatry to be more valuable.

I hope the second edition goes into more depth in almost every area of the book. Try the Handbook of Psychiatric Nursing instead by Gail Stewart instead.

Nowhere near sufficient2
I'm sorry but this book just doesn't cut the mustard. The Oxford Handbooks series are usually first class and above all comprehensive. This title sadly is an exception. I would say inadequate coverage across the range even at student level where it may just pass as an aide memoire with its lists and bullet points. Look to the handbook of psychiatry for much more useful and in-depth guidance.

A must have!5
This is a must have for mental health students, everything you need to know to give you an overview of mental health nursing. Each topic is about a page long & gives you references for further reading.
