From the Author
In May 2005 the original Going Native in Murcia book was borne out of the frustration of none of the major guides covering the region, or at best only dedicating 4 or 5 pages to it. Since then Murcia has been getting a lot more attention thanks to its wonderful climate, warm and welcoming people and a very strong, and so-far relatively undeveloped, property market.
My husband Marcus and I moved here permanently in late 2005 and started work on the second edition to ensure the content stayed up to date.
However, it wasn't until my dad asked me to help him look for a house to buy in the region, that I realised Going Native in Murcia was lacking. While it gives new residents a great overview of the area including the towns, accommodation, food and activities and even a step-by-step breakdown of the house buying process, it doesn't focus on helping you decide where in Murcia to invest your money.
So, this book, Buying Property in Murcia, has been written just for you if you want to buy a house, finca, off-plan, castle or cave in the region of Murcia and want the most thoroughly researched information you can get from a buyer's perspective.
My goal is to help both the property investor and the lifestyle buyer alike. A tall order perhaps, but one I think I've achieved successfully with this book. I'll review it, and where necessary update it, each year so I look forward to hearing from you with feedback and ideas.
If you have content for the next edition then get in touch. Perhaps you're a property investor and want to share your strategy, or maybe you've bought off-plan and want to let us know the ins and outs - whatever your circumstances I want to hear your story.
And remember, I'm here to help if I can so don't be shy - contact me at my website!

Four Years too Late!
How I wish that I had had a copy of this book four years ago when I bought our house in Los Nietos,Murcia. Then I had to struggle with dealing with banks, solicitors, notaries, builders etc all by myself. This book is full of good practical advice and takes you through the buying process stage by stage. There was just one note of caution that was not mentioned, you have to be very careful with the exchange rates. A property can cost thousands more if the rate goes against you, in our case we paid 14%more, but you can insure against this by buying currency at a set rate. There are several firms that will do this for you and make the funds available when you come to purchase possibly 2 or 3 years later on a new build.Of course you pay a percentage for this service.
I like the way Debbie describes Murcia area by area and unlike other books presents Murcia "warts and all "eg. you need heating in the winter months." I especially like the inclusion of other peoples experiences of buying in Murcia. In fact I would reccommend this book to anyone thinking about buying in Spain, Debbie makes it so easy, just follow the tick-lists and before you know it you too will have your own place in the sun. Thanks Debbie for such a smashing book.
