These are journeys that encompass many of the themes of Ray's world - discovery, the natural world, indigenous culture, adventure and survival. Above all, they represent something very close to Ray's heart - the most important thing that we can learn when travelling is to be open to new ideas, new ways of doing things and new experiences. For Ray, this is the only way to promote understanding and learning. His voyage into the wilds of Australia covers an amazing variety of natural habitats, rich indigenous cultures and tales of exploration and survival. Ray Mears Goes Walkabout is full of Ray's trademark survival knowledge and wilderness tips.

Excellent DVD
Ray Mears is entertaining and informative. The quality of the DVD is fantastic (picture quality, sound etc) and the content is great. Each show has Ray out on location in Australia talking about survival skills in what must be some of the most extreme locations on earth. Each episode is not only theory, but filled with real life survival stories of people who really have had to survive in the locations he visits. The show with the 'Bush Tucker Man' was brilliant, anyone who enjoyed his shows 20 years ago will love to see him take this journey with Ray.
You can always rely on Ray.
Excellent dvd. To me, Ray comes across as a little pompous at times, but you can't deny he knows his stuff and is as tough as old boots (in his typically unassuming way). Very interesting and informative look at the Aborigines culture and the pioneers who helped map out Australia. Don't make the mistake of comparing Ray Mears to Bear Grylls. Bear is a totally different animal, looking at different things for different reasons, which is good in it's own way, but Ray draws the viewer into the history of various cultures' survival techniques and teaches his audience to respect nature and take a little interest in the history of the land. Great stuff.
Ray discovers castaway Barbara Crawford Thompson
As ever, another brilliant Ray Mears series. Highlight has to be when Ray 'discovers' the oral history of a headhunting tribe in the Straits Settlements, who talk about a white woman who lived amongst them 160 years ago until rescued. She was Barbara Crawford Thompson, not yet a woman and not entirely unknown to the then Australian authorities. If you want to find out what 25 years oof research reveals about her age, how she got to be amongst headhunters, why she was not rescued by the authorities and why her story has been covered up, you will be interested in the book WILDFLOWER, The Barbara Crawford Thompson Story by Ray Warren. Do a search on amazon uk, I am the only seller of this book in UK, it is a paperback not a hardcover as stated by amazon.
