The Essential How-to Book Illustrating the Management, Styling and Care of Black Children's Hair. In the black community, a girl whose hair was not done properly caught hell from playmates and their mothers alike. How a girl's hair looked told you a lot about "her people", so great care was taken in making sure the parts were straight and the braids neat. By the '70s and '80s, women who spent years becoming players in the business world, had daughters of their own. These women's mothers were no longer living nearby or with them, so they had to do their daughter's hair themselves, usually with disastrous results. It's All Good Hair is an essential guidebook for parents to style and care for Black children's hair - both boys and girls. This conversational, how-to book with easy-to-follow, step-by-step instructions features hair-care and styling tips from a variety of experts and includes photos and illustrations.

Less of the pep talk
I would have found this book more useful if it had steered clear of the usual stuff about black people disliking their hair, and why they shouldn't. After all that 'pep talk', I was surprised to find a section at the back on how to relax children's hair. I was not interested in the personal stories either. I just wanted tips on how to wash, style and care for all types of black hair. Actually, the title is a bit of a giveaway, but this was the only near-suitable book I could find at the time.
These faults aside, this book is useful. The information about different types of black hair, from identifying curly to kinky, and how to wash and condition hair is great. The illustrations on how to create the various styles are clear too. Overall, between the waffle it is an informative book which gives you some inspiration on how to create styles in your own home.
