Manufacturer's Description
As home networking continues to spread and evolve at rapid speed, some users find that their wireless router does not reach all corners or their home, or that they would like to have their wireless network originate from a point of their choosing, rather than be tethered to the point where the Internet enters their home. Other users would rather have a wireless network where no product is on the floor, and no cables are visible at all.The WGXB102 allows the user to have their wireless network originate from the middle of their home, or from even the furthest extremity, with no cables visible. The kit consists of the XE102 Wall-Plugged Ethernet bridge and a WGX102 54 Mbps Wall-Plugged Wireless Range Extender. The XE102 connects to an existing wired or wireless router from any vendor, and the WGX102 can be plugged into any electrical outlet to create an area of wireless access.Plug the XE102 into a wired or wireless router from any vendor, and then plug the WGX102 into any power outlet at your desired location to provide wireless access where desired.A new wall-plugged form factor allows the user to have a full wireless network without any visible Ethernet cables, and without any floor or desk space occupied. The sleek platinum casing blends well into any home decor.

IMPORTANT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU BUY
Netgear's sales blurb implies that you can plug this network extender in anywhere in the house and it will work. Not true. It will only work if the electrical socket you are using to power the unit connected to your router is on the same electrical circuit as the electical socket into which you want to plug the unit that rebroadcasts the signal. In my case I had a router downstairs and wanted to extend the circuit into my daughter's room upstairs. This product didn't work because the downstairs ring main was on a different circuit to the upstairs ring main - which I am guessing is an extremely common feature of the way houses are wired. The implication is that this product will only work in specific and probably quite limited conditions. So check your electrical circuits before you buy!
(also check the web for numerous complaints that these units give up the ghost after a year or so. I never got that far!)
Working well now but instructions are wrong
Bought this device to simply extend the Wireless network into the far end of the house. Most (not all) reviews seemed to indicate that setup would be straightforward and I am reasonably competant a seting up PC's and network.
Followed instructions to the letter with absolutely no success. Could not connect to the extender at all. The factory defaults do not match the instructions and hence I could not configure the extender to allow network access. I do not have other Netgear equipment. Googling the net didn't help much
Finally realised that the access point could be configured from the wired end of the LAN. After configuring the wireless LAN setting of the access point from my wired desktop the units have worked fine. The default factory setting are completly different to as described in the instructions. hence the first connection was impossible.
Extremely annoying that the instructions were so wrong and this caused a great deal of frustation.
Other then that all working now.
Excellent product
Following the completion of a home office in my detached garage, the hunt was on for a solution to the standard wireless issues that seem to haunt everyone in stone-built properties. I have a Netgear RangeMax router and still could not get a signal in 90% of the house when the router was in the new office.
I was discouraged from purchasing the WGXB102 kit from previous reports on this and other websites but I decided to go with my instinct and my experience has been nothing but positive. The kit arrived promptly and I eagerly unpacked and begun installation. Because of the negative reviews I'd read, I was careful to fully read the instructions enclosed. A 4 page 'quick guide' was included along with a much more detailed manual on a CD. Didn't need the CD - the leaflet told me everything I needed to know.
My existing network was already manually configured with WPA security which meant I had to amend the config of the access point but the instructions told me exactly how to do that. Yeah, okay, you need some Windows knowledge to know where to change your IP address but use of the Help & Support function under XP should point even a Windows novice to the right place. Basically, if you've configured security and a new SSID on your existing network then you're going to know how to configure it on the access point.
So now I can browse the internet anywhere in my house, office or garden. Maybe I should get out more......
