The most useful box in the known universe
It's the size of a pack of cards, and plugs into a Mac, Windows or Linux box with a USB socket. There are a pair of line in/line outs to hook up your CD, mixer, hifi, TV, ham-radio, or food blender, and a S/PDIF output to hook up your digital monitor speakers, or minidisk recorder. A headphone socket completes the deal. Inside is a 16 bit high quality Burr-Brown DAC, which converts your beautiful analogue sounds to digital, and vice versa. So you can record on your PC, and play the result back out. Yes, it's a sound-card.
The resulting quality is very good. Hi-fi quality in fact, and the UCA202 is finding homes with the audio fraternity too. Mine is hooked up to a mixing desk, and records into a Ubuntu laptop and Audacity. To monitor, and playback the optical output plugs into the back of a pair of Behringer MS40 speakers. A monitor switch on the UCA202 switches the headphone socket between the input and output, so you can listen to your recordings,or play music.
Utterly brilliant, use it to digitise your LP collection, update an older mixing desk, or record almost anything into your computer. (For mic, guitar or record deck you'll need a preamp). The must-have accessory for musical digerati. Works with the EEEpc and Asus Aspire One web-books too. No drivers needed, other than for Vista which needs the Asio driver from the Behringer or other web site. The most useful accessory in the history of computing? If you enjoy music creation or playback, it could be.
BEHRINGER UCA202 U-Control
We had some initial problems with a static type noise on recordings from my audio. I have this unit connected to a Mac Mini via a Belkin USB Hub. As my son has a iMac we tried it connected directly to that and lost the static problem. It occurred to us then that the static was not from the recording or the Behringer unit, but from the Belkin Hub. I now connect the UCA202 direct to my Mac Mini and have eliminated the problem. I use Garageband to process the sound but for some reason when connected it stops the use of the sound input level adjuster. We are still working on that, otherwise for the money, it is a worthwhile purchase.
Minimalist Solution for Stereo Capture and Playback
I purchased this box as a replacement for an external SB Audigy box which had gone faulty. My requirements are simple, I just need good quality stereo capture for archiving my Vinyl collection, and this little box does exactly that, with out the complexity of 5.1 surround sound etc. Worked first time out of the box, and I was up and running on my Sony laptop in minutes, it works with both direct connection and ASIO drivers. Another big plus is that it is self powered off the USB bus, no external power supply.
