Manufacturer's Description
NETGEAR's DG834N RangeMax" NEXT wireless ADSL modem router provides maximum coverage and bandwidth, enabling you and your entire household to simultaneously connect to multiple Internet services and online media.
To explain the capabilities of this RangeMax" NEXT wireless modem router further: Imagine connecting to the Internet from anywhere in the house, without a cable. Then imagine everyone in the house connecting at the same time, and all doing things online or over the network - all at the same time: Watching a Hi-Definition video or TV programme in the living room, browsing the Internet in the study, playing online games in the den, downloading MP3 music from the dining room - all at the same time. This is what RangeMax" NEXT is capable of, all over a single home.
The DG834N Wireless Modem Router utilises a technology called 'Steady-Stream', which ensures your wireless network offers a steady constant connection, with sufficient bandwidth available to stream, download, browse the Internet and transfer files all at the same time. With RangeMax NEXT you should not experience any more frustrating interruptions or freezes, just a constant connection that enables you and your household to use the Internet and wireless network as you choose, whenever you choose.
Touchless WiFi Security makes creating the highest level of network security easy and includes industry standard wireless encryption standards for you to choose from: WEP, WPA-PSK, or WPA2-PSK. These security features enable you to 'lock-down' your home wireless network, protecting you against unwanted intruders. With the RangeMax" NEXT Notebook adapter inserted, your PC will maintain a steady, constant connection (when used in conjunction with the WNR834B or DG834N Wireless Router), with sufficient bandwidth available to stream, download, browse the Internet, and transfer files all at the same time.

Netgear did the job
I bought this mainly to replace my freebie USB broadband modem, which kept dropping it's connection after my broadband speed was increased from 1Mb to 5Mb. Installation of the modem router was a doddle and setting up the security was also straightforward (although disappointingly by default it was switched off). It connected to my ISP immediately and has been rock solid since, with consistently high speeds. It does not get hot. It took several goes to install the USB adaptor software, but this was probably due to my Via motherboard than the software. I am getting wireless connection speeds of 150-270Mb through 2 ceilings.
Update June 2008. Unfortunately the modem router has stopped working after 9 months, due to a problem with the power supply, which seems to be a common difficulty. I have sent it back. It's a shame, because it was very good. I would change my star rating from 5 to 2, but can't edit it.
Great kit!
The DG834N modem router is very easy to set up and even someone with no previous experience of wireless networking should be able to quickly get things working without any serious problems. PC and Mac users are both catered for and I set the router up via a Mac laptop because I could not get a wired internet connection to the desktop PC. The DG834N automatically detects your broadband connection once you input the user name and password given to you by your ISP (using the web browser interface) and you should have your network up and running in minutes. You can choose to connect up manually and bypass the automatic setup if you wish. The wireless signal has good range and remains rock steady with no dropouts. It is also a nice-looking piece of kit and it barely gets warm, unlike my previous Belkin wireless modem router which ran very much on the hot side.
I had some problems getting the WN121T usb adapter to work consistently with the router; when waking the computer (PC running XP Home) from standby mode the wireless network associated with the usb adapter was not being recognised and indeed appeared to have vanished completely. Sometimes the adapter found a signal but it would not acquire an internet connection. Only a reboot of either the router or the computer would get me connected to the internet again. These problems now seem to have been sorted out by updating to the latest available driver for the WN121T, downloaded from the Netgear web site, and by manually inputting the Domain Name Server (DNS) addresses (Primary DNS and Secondary DNS), via the router manager, rather than leaving the router to automatically get these from your ISP - your ISP should provide you with the DNS details so that you can do this. This is done in the "Basic Setting" area of your router manager.
All-in-all, both items in this deal are excellent. You won't get the highest speeds this router promises if your other wireless equipment is not of the wireless "n" standard, but the backward compatibility means your old b or g cards/adapters will operate just fine with it. At £88 this is a steal; Argos sell these two items but if you buy from them it will set you back £210!
Highly recommended.
DG834N RangeMax NEXT Wireless ADSL Modem Router & USB 2.0 Adapter
For starters, i think this product is excellent.
Well considering my last router was hopeless (a Belkin). That took an over the phone guide through to install lasting at least an hour. the NetGear took around 10 minutes.
The connection is steady, fast and reliable. It also looks good and keeps cool.
At first i couldn't get my wireless laptop to connect to it, but i quickly sorted this by reinstalling the wireless adapter on it. From then on it ran like clockwork...but faster!, this was basically the only negative i can think of.
I recommend this product, and from my experience don't bother with a Belkin, it packed in about a week after the warranty expired.
